All warfare is based on deception. Appear weak when you're strong, and strong when you're weak - move your enemy but don't be moved by him.

"Get them close enough to check your pulse then slip the knife under the ribs. It's chess." Cairo muttered, lighting her cigarette early in the morning.

You leaned against her pillows, looking at Cairo who looked out the window where the sun was just peaking through. "You're kind of scary."

"Yet you love me for it."

Your gaze lingered around her room, awkward from the night before. You had an inkling that she would just ignore the whole night all together, but it still didn't hurt any less. "Did you actually turn in that story to the principal?"

Cairo nodded, not taking her eyes off the view from outside, puffing her cigarette.

"You know this will ruin his life." You didn't care, but you wanted to see what Cairo thought of all this. Or if she really thought this through.

"I know. That's why I did it."

"Winnie won't be happy about this."

"Good thing I don't need her permission to do what I want."

Silence took over the room. You swore she could hear your heart beating.

"Do you still love him?"

Cairo scoffed, her gaze finally looking at yours. "I never did. This was part of something bigger."

"I mean..." She added. "Yeah, it would have been great if he actually appreciated my work, acknowledged my creativity, but I overestimated him. I never loved him." because I love you. Why is it so hard to admit that?

The gnawing question in your head was about to spill out, but Cairo spoke before you could. "Don't tell Winnie about the whole situation with Miller. It's probably best if she doesn't know."

You knew she would find out one way or another, but you nodded.

"And if she asks about me, tell her you know nothing."

"Ask about you? Aren't you going to be in class today?" You tilted your head in confusion.

She shook her head. "The principal changed my schedule after receiving my story, so I don't have a class with him."

Another beat of silence.

You swallowed hard, the tension is the air suffocating. "About last night..." You looked down at the blanket, playing with the soft texture.

Cairo interrupted with a shake of her head. "We were both drunk. Things happen." She stood up leaving her finished cigarette on the ashtray. She made her way to her dresser. "C'mon, we're gonna be late for school."

You sighed, getting up to your own dresser. So much time was spent in her room that you basically had your own. "Right." There would be another time to talk, you thought. So you left it like that, knowing this would happen.

The sound of the locker closing engulfed the hallway. It was the end of the week and you wanted nothing more than to go home. This whole week was filled with Cairo ignoring Winnie, and, as much as you hated to admit, she was also sorta ignoring you. Maybe not, but, she definitely didn't let you talk anything remotely close to what had happened on that night. It was starting to bother you.
