Shinyu lived on the other side of the slum I lived in. And sometimes, I would go to sleep next to him. Being in his arms made me forget what I was going through.

"When I turn 18, I will be entitled to my parents' money. Then we will not be as miserable as we are now, Shinyu."

He smiled and stared at the broken ceiling above us. I wondered how they managed when it was raining. He did not reply to anything I said but closed his eyes and slept for the night.

I finally earned my first paycheck from my job. I entered a gift shop and bought something affordable for Hyeri and Shinyu.

I felt bad for Hyeri because all she had to hug at night was either her brother or a small toy which Shinyu made for her. It was a small sack which originally contained god knows what, stuffed with rice and markings on its facial features were made with a marker. It brought tears to my eyes, thinking Hyeri was not having a good childhood as I did; and from that moment on, I knew I would do my best to try and keep her face jolly all of the time.

For Shinyu, I bought a watch. Because he never had anything to tell the time from. It was a second-hand watch, with dark blue leather straps. When I gave it to him, he looked taken aback and kept returning the gift. But I insisted on him keeping it considering my 18th birthday was in just 2 months.

Oh, what a relief it would be to finally break free from this predicament.
