2.10: Ride or Die

The line stopped ringing and my stomach dropped as I heard his voice "Hey this is Colton, leave a message at the tone and I'll give you a shout back."

I hung up before the tone sounded and looked to Parker.

"You should try calling again he probably didn't answer because he doesn't recognize the number." She stated giving my shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

I nodded and let out a deep breathe as I pressed the redial button. There were two rings before the line was picked up.

A familiar but unexpectedly female voice answered "Hey who is this?"

"Luna?" I questioned to the speakerphone

Silence.

"Luna is that you?" I questioned once more.

"Y-yeah," there was a pause "who is this?"

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you." I half laughed, choking back tears "God it's good to hear your voice."

"Harper?" Her voice wavered, her breathing heavy through the speaker "Is that really you because if this is some cruel joke some asshole is playing or..."

"It's really me." I nodded though she couldn't see me, tears streaming down my face

"Oh my god... you're alive." Her voice was barely a whisper

Reality rushed back to me as I looked up at Parker who was waving her hand as though to tell me to hurry up.

"Listen to me Luna I love you, I miss you, and I'm sorry but it's extremely important you don't tell anyone about this okay? I need you to get Colton on the phone immediately I don't have much time." I stated as seriously as possible despite my shaky tone

"Okay give me a second." She replied shakily, a shuffling sound following

I could hear faint whispering for a few moments before a chill was sent to my very core "Sis is it really you? You're really alive?"

"Yes it's me, it's really me Colton." I was sobbing now, my words a jumbled mess

There was a pause "Fuck you had me so... so..." his voice cracked "I missed you so much, I thought you were dead. I was such an asshole last time I saw you and..."

"I'm so sorry I didn't call sooner it just wasn't safe, it still isn't." I stated, letting out a sigh as I tried to focus "Listen Colton we're trying to figure out a few things to make it safe to come home but it's gonna take some time."

"Sis I know you can't talk long but I have to tell you something." There was no doubt he was now sobbing too and it broke my heart to hear him like this

I can only imagine how much worse it was when he thought I was dead...

"Luna and I are engaged." He stated and then laughed causing my heart to flutter for them "I can see why she's your best friend, she really is amazing you know?"

"I know she is and I saw the announcement online. I've been keeping tabs on you two, don't you worry." I joked causing us both to laugh as Parker gave me a serious look and a cut off sign "I love you Colton and I don't care what happened last we saw each other. I'm so happy for both of you, congratulations and I hope I'll do anything to make the wedding. I have to go though."

"It's in a little over three months, August 31st to be exact. We set a date today, you're the first to know." He stated, and even through the phone I knew he was smiling "Harp I need you to know that I love you no matter what, no matter who you love."

"I love you too." I mumbled out, trying my best to hold it together

I hung up the call and looked up at Parker who had tears brimming in her eyes now. I leaned over and pulled her into a tight hug.

"I love you." She whispered

I whispered back in her ear "I love you too."

We separated after a moment and I laughed causing her to look over at me.

I threw my hands up still cracking up "We got all dressed up to sit in a parking lot and cry."

She joined in on the laughter and shook her head "We did a lot more than just that."

I nodded, smiling to myself "Yeah I guess we did."

"How do you feel?"

"Like an infinite weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I mean, I know I've alluded to it before but, Colton and I just, we've always been like this" I crossed my fingers holding them up for her to see "and knowing he was hurting when he should be the happiest he's ever been was absolutely killing me inside."

She nodded and leaned over running her fingers through my hair "He's your family."

"He's more than that." I stated with a shrug "He's the only person I had growing up that always loved me unconditionally. He was there for me through everything and did everything he could to make me happy. He'd never have admitted it, probably still wouldn't to this day but, he looked out for me like no one else ever has. No one else until you that is."

I looked over at her, an overwhelming surge of emotions coursing through me at the speed of light.

"I want to marry you someday, did you know that?" I questioned leaning in closer so our lips were mere inches apart, my palm resting on her jaw

I could see the blush taking over her face even in the darkness "I want to marry you one day too."

I leaned in and placed a slow sweet kiss on her lips like none ever before. This kiss was different, it was raw, it was like a promise of what was to come.

She pulled back, her eyes vacant of any barricades in this moment "You're my family Harp, and I genuinely don't know what I would do without you. I love everything about you and I trust you unconditionally. I didn't even know it was possible to feel this way about another person until you wandered into my life. I remember the first time I met you, you seemed so sweet and innocent back then but also so smart and strong willed. I knew from the moment you walked into my office, and especially the moment I caught you staring at my ass, that you were going to change absolutely everything but I still had no idea how much. I'm so grateful to have you by my side, you are literally my ride or die and I mean that. I would die for you Harper Bardot and I wouldn't think twice about it."

I couldn't possibly form a coherent response worthy of speaking aloud so instead, I kissed her like my life depended on it. I savored the feeling and the taste like it was the first and last time all at once.
