It was about 8am in the morning and you were laying down on your bed, still having yet to move. For some people, 8am is an early time to be waking up. For you, this was considered 2 hours late. However, after the disaster you created a few days ago, you didn't really feel like getting up anyway.
The floorboards creaked as you finally stood up from your bed, heftily stretching your arms upward. You managed to get a good amount of sleep, considering that now you're sleeping around 8:30pm, something which you normally neglect with all of the daily farm work you do. You continued across the room and entered the kitchen, preparing yourself an omelette.
Sizzling was the only noise filling the room for a few minutes, until a knock came from the door. You cocked your head, confused, as you hadn't had visitors for a few days. Usually people only came when they needed a chore done. Whatever needed to be done for them this time would have to wait a couple of days until you got out of your rut. You rolled your eyes and looked back to the frying pan, only for the person at the door to knock again. You groaned, turning the oven heat down as you walked towards the door.
As they opened it up, their face filled with surprise at the sight of Shane. They fumbled, before pulling themselves together and managing to speak.
"Shane?"
"Yeah. I uh... I really should've stopped by earlier. I planned to come yesterday after work, but I just got super nervous and walked away. I'm sorry."
"No, no, don't- don't be. It's fine."
You both stood there awkwardly, until Shane finally spoke up.
"So," his voice cracked. "Uh... I wanted to talk about what happened."
You let out a light laugh, clutching the doorknob tighter.
"Yeah, I'm sorry, that was uhh..." you averted your gaze. "...That was really stupid of me, huh? I shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry." You now started fidgeting with the doorknob.
"No, don't apologize." Shane held his hands behind his back, his shoulders moving around as he was likely fidgeting with his fingers. He remained looking at you, despite you not being able to maintain eye contact. "Would it be weird if I told you that I feel the same way?" he blurted out. Your face turned bright red as you looked straight at him. His cheeks began to flush.
"...You do?"
"Yeah, and I'm sorry that I didn't say it sooner. I think- I dunno, maybe I was just afraid of getting into a relationship. That doesn't mean that I don't like you the same way. I'd rather push myself into a relationship rather than regret never doing that with the right person, you know?"
"Yeah. I think that I felt the same way. It took everything in me to not chicken out the moment I stepped into the ranch."
You both chuckled, exchanging glances at each other. "So, would you wanna go to the Saloon tonight?" Shane asked. You smiled, looking into his eyes. "I'd love that." You leaned against the doorframe as both of you looked at each other for a bit longer. Shane's face quickly turned a bright shade of pink, his eyes and smile becoming wider. "Alright, I'll see you then." He briskly walked away, grinning and waving as he did so. "Bye!" you yelled.
Maybe you didn't screw up, after all.
