"Sometimes, I think you like getting punched," Bucky rolled his eyes inconspicuously, bouncing on his heels as he walked towards Steve. Steve dusted himself off and looked at Bucky, and his blue eyes scrutinised him.
"I had him on the ropes," Steve whined, looking up at his best friend. Bucky was more than a head taller than him, and ten times as strong. It was only at that moment that Bucky noticed the crumpled piece of paper in Steve's hand. He furrowed his brow and snatched it away after some panicked protest from the accused. "Oh, you're from Paramus now," Bucky glared at Steve, looking back down at the enlistment form before adding, "You know, it's illegal to lie on the enlistment form."
Steve only sighed as Bucky chided, "And really? Jersey?" He bit his lips, looking Bucky up and down. His brunet hair was neatly gelled back and he was wearing a green uniform, a cap placed lopsidedly on his head. Steve sighed again. "You got your orders?"
Bucky closed his eyes, looking down with a shaky breath. He doesn't want to hurt Steve. He doesn't want to leave Steve. He doesn't want to go. Despite all this, he cockily raises his chin, and bouncing on his heels, he confidently makes his deployment sound exciting. Trying to make himself into everything that Steve ever dreams off.
Because that's all that he wants to be.
"The 107th. Sergeant James Barnes. Shipping out for England first thing tomorrow."

The soft sound of raindrops against the window provides a steady rhythm that soothes Steve's busy mind. It was like the peaceful clinking of a champagne flute, lilting and clear. Small puffs of air hitting his neck and the quiet breathing from his lover next to him add to the peaceful ambience. He sighs in contentment and smiles, looking over at Bucky's form next to him.
"Goodnight, Buck," Steve muttered, playing with Bucky's long brown hair that he thought was getting too long. Bucky murmured incoherently and Steve grinned.
"Night, Stevie." Bucky whispered, cuddling with Steve. His face rested on Steve's chest as his lover's fingers ran through his hair. "I love you so much, Buck," Steve whispered admiringly, looking down at the love of his life, before adding, "I can't think of a single thing that I wouldn't do for you."
Bucky sniffled softly, burying his face in the crook of Steve's neck. He struggled to contain his tears as Steve stroked his back comfortingly. He was used to Bucky being like this, even though it hurt him. Bucky buried his face deeper and Steve wrapped both arms around him. "I love you," he murmured, "Always." He knew that when Bucky went to sleep, he would be woken again — breathing deeply as if he was being strangled, sweating profusely, his cheeks stained with tears. It broke Steve's heart.
But for now, he just wanted to feel Bucky by his side. He just wanted that sense of security that he got from him since they met.
Bucky perked up suddenly, as if finally done contemplating his answer. "I'd do anything for you too, Stevie. I'll get it if you need it. I'll search if you don't see it. You're thirsty, I'll be rain. You get hurt, I'll take your pain." He reached to hold Steve's hand and Steve let out a longing sigh. Then a pang hit him. His whole life, Bucky had taken away his pain. The things that Bucky knew would hurt him, he buried deep inside him, and let them hurt him.
"I want to be with you forever, Buck," Steve whispered. Bucky smiled against Steve's chest and nodded. His reply was barely audible, "Me too, Stevie. Me too." Steve chuckled and Bucky's heart seemed to melt as Steve embraces him, holding him even closer. He held his lover's hand in his as they slowly drifted off into dreamland.
Together.
"Hey, Stevie?" Bucky murmured. Steve nodded. "No matter what, I'll be your soldier."
