"You know me," Steve insisted, looking into Bucky's eyes for any sign of recognition. The Winter Soldier simply stared at Steve, his eyes unfocused and confused.
He growled, "No! I DON'T!" His face is a mix of confusion, anger, hatred, and fear. Because a part of him knows the man in front of him, beyond the man he was tasked to kill. And he struggled with the most basic question.
How could the man in front of him claim to know him, if he didn't even know himself?
Looking into Bucky's cerulean blues, Steve stood still, refusing to fight back.
"Bucky, you've known me your whole life..." Steve starts, but Bucky punched him before he can finish. Heaving, Steve continued to stand still, his face bloody and bruised, but his determination as strong as ever. He couldn't fight back. Perhaps it would have been easier if he had worn the mask, if Steve could convince himself that the man in front of him was not James Barnes. But he couldn't now. Not when there was no mask to hide the person that he used to know - his best friend, his brother, his everything. And in those steel blue eyes, all Steve saw was the pain and suffering his Bucky had endured.
He gripped his shield tightly. "Your name..." Steve continues, "Is James... Buchanan... Barnes..."
Bucky punched Steve again.
"SHUT UP!" Something flashed across Bucky's face for just a moment, a single second that Steve saw something human, and he wanted to cry.
"I'm not gonna fight you..." Steve whispered aloud, trying to stay balanced on the helicarrier. Slowly, he took off the helmet that would keep him alive in a fall, causing Bucky to stare at him confused. Staring straight into Bucky's blue irises, Steve dropped his shield into the depths of the river below them.
"You're my friend..." Steve finishes. With a shout, Bucky pushes Steve to the ground. "You're my mission!" Bucky shouts, looking straight at Steve without a hint of recognition or compassion.
"YOU'RE!"
"MY!"
"MISSION!"
Mercilessly, Bucky punched Steve across the face repeatedly, shouting each of his three words loudly. His long chocolate brown hair sways slightly in the wind, and he seems almost like a lion, attacking his prey ferociously. Relentlessly. Ruthlessly.
"Then... finish it..." Steve whispered, his voice crisp and clear. With a start, Bucky stops his hand midway, and he holds his fist up hesitantly.
"Cause I'm with you till the end of the line..."
And, ignoring the words, Bucky raised his gun.
And then, he saw the man in front of him lifeless.
Bucky sat up in shock, his eyes darting wildly as he snapped out of his nightmare. Steve let out a low groan as Bucky's mechanical palm clamped down on his arm.
"Shit. Shit. Shit." He whispered to himself. Tears ran down his face as he looked at Steve. His eyes darted to his left arm and he released Steve from his grip. His body was wracked with sobs as he curled up into a ball. "Oh my God," he whispered as he sobbed. He cried quietly. All of his emotions were numbing him. Bucky felt the tears freely flowing down his face as he whined softly, fearful and scared. He let out a few shaky breaths and pressed his back against the headboard, wiping at his sweat-drenched forehead with the back of his hand. A great tremor hit him, and his grief poured out in a flood of tears.
When your day is long
Out of a sudden, he felt two strong arms wrapping in front of him and pulling him into a warm chest. "It's okay," Steve's voice murmured as he entwined their fingers carefully so as not to scare him.
