I got paged, 911. It was about the female I recently helped. I mumbled, "Shit."
*She raised my eyebrow as she noticed how you just changed your tone. You got worried. She was concerned about your patient, but she was a bit jealous, actually.*
"Is she okay?" Callie asked.
"Got to go." I ran inside of the ICU since it was right in front of me. I dropped the chart and saw a clear image of her pale and skinny, it looks like she hadn't been eating.
*Her heart sped up as she realized that the patient was very vulnerable, if the patient doesn't have enough nutrients the patient is going to get weak. She rushed after you trying to catch up.*
"Give her a low-dose of corticosteroids, cyproheptadine, megestrol and dronabinol." I gave the patient a reassuring smile, "Everything is going to be ok."
*She watched you while you handled the situation. She saw how worried you were about her, and how determined you could be if the patient couldn't recover. You were working hard to make the patient healthy again, and that made Callie admire you more.*
"She looks very young, do you know her?" She asked.
"I don't know her, she's my patient. I care for my patients." I responded. I sat by her and held her hand.
*She noticed that you still held the patients hand, trying to comfort the patient. You were such a sweet and caring person.*
"You're a good doctor" She whispered.
"Thank you." I smiled
*The patient seemed more comfortable as you were holding her hand. The patients heart beat slowed down for a bit. You were calming her down just by being there for her.*
I zoned out thinking about something
*Callie gently put a hand on your shoulder.*
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
I flinched, "Don't talk, be quiet."
*She stayed silent, worried about what was going on in your head. Callie could see that you were deep in thought, probably about work things, but the way you told her to be quiet and how you flinched as she touched you made me wonder...*
"Callie, I need to talk with you outside." I said
*She didn't know what you were about to say, but the seriousness of your tone made Callie feel butterflies in her stomach.*
"Of course" She answered.
I walked out, but I gave the patient a reassuring smile
*She followed you, not knowing what were you gonna tell Callie but hoping for something positive. She also had something to say that has been stuck in her mind but... She wasn't sure if she should tell you.*
"She has Fibromyalgia, all the symptoms match up." I said
*Fibromyalgia can be a pretty tough disease. There's no cure for it and its symptoms can be pretty hard to manage: fatigue, joint and muscular pain... all of this can lead to depression*
"How are you gonna treat her?" Callie asked.
"There's no cure yet, do you reckon we can do a clinical trial?" I stated
*That sounded interesting, so far there has been no cure for this disease and clinical trials could mean a huge discovery.*
"Are you sure you wanna proceed with this?" She asked, "We need to be very careful"
"It will save millions of females." I cried out
*She looked at you shocked. seeing you having such a noble cause really touched Callie . She felt like you were a whole different person.*
"Why do you care so much about this?" She asked.
"People are injured and hurt because of this disease, and there wondering why do they feel so strange all of a sudden." I started to tell her
*Fibromyalgia is not very well known yet, but all the chronic pain and fatigue that people suffers causes them to have a huge decrease in quality of life.*
"People often say that it's psychological or that they are being dramatic but it's not like that, right?" Callie questioned
"Yea, it's not like that. It's a disease which we can beat, i'm telling you." I smiled
*Callie took a deep breath. your attitude towards this unknown disease was really refreshing. She had nothing but admiration for you.*
"Then I think you should do it, we can change a lot of lives" She said encouraging you.
"Will you help me?" I asked
*Callie's heart skipped a beat. She was surprised at your words. She wasn't expecting you to invite her to such an important task as this one.*
"Yes, of course, why wouldn't I help you?" She replied, a bit nervous.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I went up to her and hugged her
*Callie was surprised by your hug. It felt warm and she couldn't help but hug you back. She wanted to keep the moment for a little bit longer because she knew if you let go we would be back to our professional relationship.*
I let go, "I'll try to get Arizona on this case and then we can go to Owen."
"Sounds good" She replied. She took a deep breath and exhaled. She still felt like her heart was going to jump out of her chest. She couldn't believe that you had asked her to work with you, let alone the way you reacted to her hugging you. maybe there was hope after all...
I walked back into the ICU, and said to the patient that we might need for her to stay in a bit longer. She was happy with it.
*As she saw how the patient was happy, she felt delighted too. She could tell you really liked your job. you really cared about your patients, and she can't help but think that was one of your best qualities.*
