The day of the Militia ball had dawned, and the Grimaldi manor was abuzz with activity as the maids scurried about, diligently attending to their mistresses' preparations.

Emma gracefully spun around in her elegant ivory gown, her hair artfully arranged in a chignon adorned with delicate tendrils and pearls. Opting for comfort, she chose to wear flats instead of the customary heels.

"Oh, Emma!" Peggy exclaimed, her eyes filled with excitement. "Lord Dennings will surely be captivated by your beauty the moment he lays eyes on you!" Peggy confidently reassured her dear friend.

Emma, however, responded with a gentle smile, her doubts lingering in her mind. "I am not so certain, dear Peggy," she replied softly, her voice filled with modesty.

Rosemary pursued Elaine once more, her voice echoing through the air. "Elaine! That bonnet belongs to me!" she cried out. Peggy observed their playful chase, her maids adorning her in a delicate blush-colored gown, comfortable flats, and an elegant chignon with tendrils framing her face, much like her sister. She adorned herself with pearls, adding a touch of sophistication. "Elaine, you may borrow one of my bonnets," Peggy kindly offered, extending a bonnet towards her.

"Oh, my dear girls! You possess the same beauty I once possessed!" Ms. Grimaldi exclaimed, her face beaming with pride as she clasped her hands together. The family proceeded towards the awaiting carriage, with Mr. Grimaldi remaining behind to oversee their departure. Ms. Grimaldi, acting as a chaperone, accompanied her daughters, eagerly welcoming any potential suitors for their hand in a dance.

The ballroom was filled with lively music as they made their entrance, and already there were couples gracefully dancing. Lord Dennings, his eyes sparkling, beheld Emma with admiration, while she gazed back at him tenderly, her smile illuminating the room. On the other hand, Mr. Salisbury appeared immediately displeased with Peggy, deliberately refusing to dance with her. Lord Dennings, however, gallantly took Emma's hand and led her onto the dance floor, where her sisters were engaged in lively dances with the militia.

Meanwhile, Peggy found solace in the company of her friend, Mr. Fanning, as they danced a delightful quadrille together. Mr. Fanning proved to be both agreeable and amusing, and Peggy couldn't help but laugh at his witty jokes. Surprisingly, Mr. Salisbury's gaze seemed to soften upon catching sight of Peggy, yet he quickly dismissed any tender sentiments as mere foolishness.

Lord Dennings and Emma partook in the quadrille together, and he appeared to become increasingly captivated by her. Peggy concluded the dance and observed her sisters as they continued to dance. Mr. Salisbury observed from a distance, his gaze once again becoming tender. And once again, he suppressed his emotions.

Rosemary engaged in a dance with a familiar young man, the gallant Captain Weston. She felt immense delight in dancing with him and was greatly flattered. Elaine, on the other hand, danced with another officer, Lieutenant Taylor, who was thoroughly charmed by her wit and allure.

Ms. Grimaldi derived great pleasure from witnessing her daughter's graceful movements as she danced with the dashing suitors. "Oh, Peggy, I implore you to continue dancing! It would greatly displease me otherwise," Ms. Grimaldi urged, gently pushing Peggy forward. Peggy nodded obediently and resumed her dance with Mr. Fanning. This time, Mr. Salisbury could not suppress his burgeoning emotions, yet he maintained his composed demeanor as he admired Peggy.

As the evening drew to a close, Lord Dennings gallantly assisted Emma into the awaiting carriage. "I am most grateful for your kindness, Lord Dennings," she murmured softly to him as they shared a smile. Mr. Fanning, too, extended his hand to help Peggy into the carriage, and she expressed her gratitude in return. However, Peggy regarded him merely as a dear friend, not a potential suitor. With that, they departed from the grand manor and embarked on their journey homeward.
