I'd Tell You I'd Kill For You, But I've Done That Already* (A Transgender Reader Story)

The sound of my sneakers hitting the pavement fills my ears. I slow down, catching my breath. A car drives by, splashing water all over my shirt.

I stop running. "Man. Could this day get any worse?"

I wring out my t-shirt and look around. Damn. How far did I run? I don't recognize any of these buildings. I keep walking until I reach a tall chain linked fence. I adjust my backpack and stick my foot into one of the links. I stop climbing once I reach the top. I slowly pull one leg over. I look down. Why did I look down? My heart rate increases and I pull my other leg over. I shut my eyes. I kick, trying to find another link to support my foot. Instead, I miss it.

My elbow is first to reach the concrete below.

"Ow...dammit!" I shout, supporting my arm that is now covered in blood.

I look up. The raindrops hit my face. I guess this day could get worse after all.

I pull my legs close to my chest. No. I refuse to cry.

Only girls cry.

I fold myself into a ball to protect myself from the rain. I feel arms wrap themselves around me and pick me up. The owner of these strong arms carry me until we're sheltered from the rain. I lift my head and comb my hair back with my fingers.

The blonde man assesses me with his eyes. "Are you hurt? Can you stand?"

I nod.

He gently places me on my feet. "Your elbow looks pretty bad."

I bring my arm close to my body. "Yeah. I guess." Luckily, I keep a first aid kit with me. I pull my backpack off my shoulders and start to rummage through its contents.

He tilts his head to the side. "Do you have a change of clothes in there as well? You'll catch a cold if you stay in those wet clothes."

A wave of heat rises to my cheeks. "Yes. I do."

"Great. Looks like we're the only ones here. Go ahead and change while we wait for the rain to clear up."

I bite my lip. I just want him to leave.

I sigh in relief when he turns away from me, giving me privacy.

"I'll keep a lookout for you," he says.
I walk behind the wall, making sure he can't see me. "Th...thank you."

I clean my wound and place a bandage over it.

I secure the Ace bandage I keep wrapped around my chest before changing my shirt. I know they aren't safe to wear, but they are all I can afford. When I'm fully dressed, I tap him on the shoulder.

He turns around. His eyes grow wide as he looks me up and down. I step back with my head down. I get the same look from kids at school. I turn so my back is facing him. My eyes sting so bad I can feel it inside my nose. He looked like a nice person, but I guess he's just like everybody else.

He rests his hand on my shoulder, and I immediately run away. The tears sneak down my cheeks as the rain hits my face.

I hear an extra pair of footsteps behind me. I take a glance over my shoulder and see him running toward me. I run faster. I run until I can't breathe.
