April 1993
They were in the living room, enjoying the rest of their evening indoors after a homemade dinner. Chicken tinga tostadas, something easy Alma managed to make in the slow cooker. The spring rain showers were in full effect now and lightning flickered occasionally through the drawn-open curtains that looked out to the porch. The rumbling thunder seemed to unsettle Echo a little until Bill distracted her with a gift. In his large luggage of curiosities, he had brought along something for her as well.
Holding the gift behind his back, he crouched down and presented a little disco ball on a standing base to his daughter. She smiled happily and reached out to touch it. When he flipped a switch on the bottom, lights on the base lit up, the disco ball began to rotate, and specks of refracted light danced around the room. Her eyes lit up and she clapped happily following the specks covering the space around them.
"Remember? The big one at Papa's job?" He asked, and she nodded as he spoke. "I made it tiny for you so I could bring it with me so that you can have it."
"Say thank you, Echo." Alma paused, brushing her damp hair from her shower. They had to take turns. They were fully planning on taking one together until Echo woke from her nap just as soon as Bill turned the faucet on. She let him go first.
"T'ank you, Papa."
"You're welcome, honey." He said placing the disco ball next to her and getting up to sit beside Alma on the couch.
He flipped through the TV channels looking for something to watch until he passed up some cartoon programs, and Echo motioned for him to go back. She then went on to be distracted by the disco ball, but he didn't change the channel because he already knew she'd say something. Instead, Alma put her feet up on his lap to finally show him her matching pedicure and manicure she had gotten the day prior. They were just nicely filed in a short shape with rounded corners, painted with black polish, and the high-shine top coat made them look sleek. It was a birthday gift from both Ulyssa and Ash and it was nice to have some girl time with them at the salon. Bill complimented them and then he gripped the second toe on her foot and pulled, popping her joint.
"Ow," she said lightly, kicking his side with her other, which made him chuckle.
Eventually, Alma decided to bring her schoolwork from the dining table to the living room. He watched her carry her bag over, mostly because she was wearing tight biker shorts with a shirt she had tied off in the front and he wanted to stare at her ass. He would peer at her homework and just see her penciling down a bunch of math formulas and occasionally she tapped on the loud calculator keys she had resting on her thigh. Because they spoke on the phone, he knew she was doing well in class. She even called him when she got the results of her midterms the month before to tell him she passed. Other than being excited over her good grades, she would always mention how boring it was. Admittedly, even to him, it looked boring.
