2. Hospital Room
Xavier sat on the bed replaying the argument in hid head. He twisted the ring around his finger. Suddenly sober, he looked at their wedding photo. Lily was beautiful. Her blonde hair was perfectly pinned up in a bun. She wore her grandmothers wedding dress, her mother begged her to get something more stylish but she so stubbornly refused. Xavier thought she made it stylish. Then there was their honeymoon. He had never experienced such pleasure. Of course, they had had sex before but that night it just felt different. Before he knew it, Xavier had been laying in bed thinking for two hours.
His phone started vibrating causing him to snap out of his daze. Hoping it was Lily, he answered quickly.
"Hello?" Xavier whispered. Instead of Lily, he heard her crying mother.
"Xavier....Lily is at the hospital....she had a terrible accident.....s-s-she is in surgery now." Her mother sobbed.
Xavier's eyes widened. "I'll be there soon." Grabbing his keys, he ran out the door to his car. Xavier raced to the hospital with only his wife in his mind.
Lily could hear the doctors and nurses yell codes that sounded like another language. Her head was pounding as she tried to mumble, "Where am I...."
One of the nurses squeezed her hands. "Shhh honey, we are going to take care of you." Her sweet voice whispered.
Lily's heart raced with fear. Where was she? What happened? All these thoughts kept her on full alert. The doctor said something about putting her to sleep. Isn't that something that you do to dogs? She asked herself.
Xavier....That name lingered in her mind.
Who was she thinking about? Who was Xavier? It was obvious that she cared for the man,but nothing else gave her a hint to who that was. Her body laid limp on the operating table.
"She has some brain damage and some large cuts. Let's go ahead and close up those cuts then run some test of her." The main doctor had announced.
Lily remembered flying out the window. She even remembered the way to the hospital. But why was she even driving? The doctors were shuffling around and getting their tools ready.
"The anesthesia is ready, Dr.Ford." A voice said.
Anesthesia? Her mind whispered. They were putting her under. Without another thought, the entire world went blank.
Xavier ran through the hospital room to see Kennedy holding Lily's mother,Diana. "Where is she?" He asked.
"Still in surgery." Kennedy answered.
Xavier threw a magazine and slid down a blue wall, burying his face in his hands. "I shouldn't have let her leave." He cried softly. He felt a hand on his shoulder to see Lily's brother frowning. "Lets take a walk." He said. Xavier stood up and followed him.
They walked outside and Derek lit up a cigarette. "What happened? Lily wouldn't leave in the middle of the night for no reason." He stated. Xavier knew this moment was going to come.
Xavier sighed, "I came home late again from the bar again. She was upset, we started arguing and I yelled at her. Then she left." Another tear slid down his cheek.
Instead of Derek hitting him,he hugged him. "I know you love my sister and she only wants what is best for her. I get your going through shit but when you said I do, you agreed to put her first like she does for you." He told him. Stunned, Xavier stood there.
Derek put Lily's wedding ring in Xavier's hand. "She was clenching this when the paramedics found her." With that, he walked away.
Xavier leaned against the brick column. His fingers traced the silver band of the ring. This was his fault. He should have begged her to stay and promised to have done better. He shouldn't have even took that pathetic job at the bar. Slowly but surely, his world was crashing.
