N I N E Y E A R S A G O
"Okay sweetheart, tell me what you remember on the day that your mother passed." The sweet judge with silver hair asks. The night my mother passed; the last night I ever had a mother.
"I can't. I don't want to." I sniffle, a tear falling down my eye.
"I know honey." She leans over so now she's talking to me and only me; forgetting the tons of eyes on the both of us. "But if you help me answer some questions, we'll be able to stop the person who hurt your mother from hurting anyone else ever again." She whispers, her breath smelling like peppermint candy.
Another tear falls from my eye. "I don't care about anyone else," I sniffle, "I only cared about her."
She takes one of my hands into hers, her frail hand only slightly bigger than mine. "So then help me find who hurt her so that person can be punished for taking her from you." She smiles softly at me but my eyes drift away and meet the man who's standing in an orange jumpsuit, hands chained together next to a cop.
His eyes look blacker than night. The shadow around him just as dark.
He hurts me. He's said to have hurt my mommy. Is it so bad that I want him to hurt now too?
Slowly I turn my head back to the judge and I begin speaking.
Remembering back to that day- to that night.
"We went to the park that morning- like we always did. I remember I was running around everywhere while she watched me while sitting on the bench. It was really hot outside; I was so sweaty. I remember I was on the monkey bars and I was so excited to show her I made it all the way across, so I called to her. She was on her phone but she looked up, it looked like she was crying. I didn't know why she was crying , she was always so happy. I ran over to her and she told me how good I did on the monkey bars and how proud of me she was. Mommy was always proud of me. I asked her if she wanted to go get ice-cream now like we always did after the park but she shook her head this time. She said we couldn't and she's sorry but we had to get home fast. I was sad but I knew she was sad too so I didn't say anything but "okay". When we got home, Mommy told me to go to my room and practice on the new keyboard she got me. She always listened to me play. She walked me to my room and shut the door. I heard yelling but I don't know why. Later Mommy made us all soup for dinner. All I remember was that she ate it fast then said she was going to go pick up some groceries. She was acting strange, really quiet. I looked at daddy, all he did was shake his head, not yell this time. She stood up and walked over to me while I was still eating. She gave me a hugeee hug and kissed my head multiple times." A tear slips down my face. "She whispered to me; no matter what happens or what anyone says that she loves me more than life itself. That was the last I ever saw her." I break out into a sob. "I miss my mommy."
