Raylin was sleeping well until a very loud screaming alarm sounded, shocking him awake. The alarm was quite loud and obnoxious. He stood up and peered around his room through drooping eyelids.
Raylin was normally woken up by Cronus shaking him awake; this time, the alarm Preya described a day before had roused him up. He didn't enjoy his new morning pattern. He used his hands to try to tidy his unkempt, knotted hair. He moved his covers to one side and stepped out of bed.
He awoke, nearly falling many times. He looked at the clock and noticed it was 6 a.m.; next to the clock was his schedule. He realized he needed to shower and change, which was simple because it was something he did every day. He spotted a mirror next to his bed.
He couldn't recall it being here. After Preya instructed him to return to his room, he only noticed the timetable and not the mirror. Perhaps Cronus put it in as he slept? Raylin shook his head; he didn't want to think of Cronus going into his room in the middle of the night with a large mirror when he was sleeping.
He stood still, staring in the mirror. This was only the second time he'd ever seen a mirror. Why was it placed here? Did Preya see how astonished he was by his look yesterday and decide it was time to offer him some sort of mirror? Perhaps it was out of pity.
He noticed a yellow sticky note taped to the mirror. He went carefully towards the mirror, seeing his reflection becoming closer and bigger with each step. He took the yellow sticky note and read it. 'Consider this a gift.' was written on it. Oh, so it was a birthday present—not what he expected, but he brushed it aside. At least he had a mirror.
He took another look at himself in the mirror. He was still dressed in the same clothing as yesterday and every other day. His hair was messier, and he appeared fatigued, most likely because he had just woken up. He noticed a pair of folded clothing on the ground.
Cronus used to give him his folded clothing after waking him up, but it appears that they are now on the floor. The metal door slipped open before Raylin could come over and pick it up, grabbing his attention right away. He had no idea why every time that awful metal door opened, his heart raced so quickly.
It was Cronus. Raylin anticipated him to have his lovely clipboard and keycard, but it was nowhere to be seen until he realized, it was replaced with a set of scissors and a razor. Okay, maybe not really replaced since the keycard was still in his hands.
Raylin examined the scissors and razor before focusing on Cronus. He didn't imagine Cronus was here to cut or shave his own hair, leaving Raylin with just one option, which caused his look to shift from impassive to uncomfortable. He held one hand over his hair, softly massaging it.
Oh god, no, no, no, how could he have forgotten that air benders shave their hair to sense the air or something? He felt dread coursing through his veins; he had never experienced pure terror, and perhaps this was it. Cronus found Raylin's eyes flitting between the things in his hands amusing. He never saw Raylin display any emotion after the age of three.
Cronus grinned, revealing his gleaming teeth. "My little air bender, you understand what I'm going to do, right? So, kindly sit down on the bed. I'll tidy up your hair while you wash." Raylin mentally grumbled. Cronus' comment just confirmed all of his thoughts, even without confirmation, he didn't need proof because Cronus's objective was obvious from the outset.
