"It's not always the heart, sometimes the mind breaks as well"

Chapter 7

Nico P.O.V

I could disappear into shadows, without anyone hearing me, without anyone seeing me, without anyone caring.

Seemed fitting.

My powers kept me hidden, out of sight, out of mind. They could also, however, do the exact opposite. They could indicate my presence— One of the things I didn't like about my powers.

When I walk into a room, shadows grow, the temperature drops. As if saying You don't belong here, get out.

Again, it seemed fitting.

When I walked into the big house, my powers reacted. The shadows on the walls grew, it got colder. And I could see questioning glances sent my way. A group of campers organizing an art club sent a glare my way, one I reciprocated fully. I could see it written on their faces, the clear message; Get out.

"Chiron," I shouted, "You needed me." I realized my voice was hoarse, tears still welled in my eyes slightly. I tried to force them back down. Only half succeeded.

The door opened with a click, Chiron stepped out, a dark expression clouding his face. When his face met mine, his eyes widened slightly.

I brushed the tears out of my eyes, remembering my name, my titles. Nico Di Angelo, Son of Hades, the Ghost King, Ambassador of Pluto. I dont show vulnerability.

"Ahem, are you doing well, Mr.DiAngelo?" Chiron asked, I could almost feel a grin pulling up on my face. Despite Chirons hundreds of years teaching kids, his comforting skills were not the best.

"I'm fine, Will said you needed me?" I coughed, clearing my voice of its hoarse pitch.

He nodded, "As you have probably heard, I'm approving a quest, you and Will." His voice was firm. Too firm, as if saying it with certainty could sway his mind that way. My gut felt hollow. I had expected it, things were too calm. My life never stayed calm for long.

"Yes I've heard, did you call me to discuss what to do first?" I asked.

"Yes, but also. . ." Chiron drifted off. He tilted his head at me, in an almost endearing way. But, even more than endearing, guilty. "Nevermind, that's a topic to discuss at a later date."

I squinted my eyes at him.

"We will announce the quest at the campfire tonight, I do have one request however."

"And that is?" I asked.

"It's clear, both you and Will are vital on this quest," His eyes wandered across a painting, a painting a young camper had done of the sunrise. "Let Will lead this quest, that's my request." I blinked, Chiron quickly added to the sentence, slight worry in his voice. "Rest assured, it's not that I don't trust you, I believe you're more than capable of leading the quest!"

My stomach churned. To say Will was to lead the quest had certain implications. First, he would get the majority of the credit, though that part didn't necessarily bother me,I had gotten used to being disregarded—Annabeth and Grover had suffered through just about the same as Percy during their quest, and they didn't get as much credit as Percy. Don't get me wrong, they were widely regarded, but that didn't stop people from thinking of Annabeth as some sort of sidekick to Percy.

Second, the downside of getting the majority of the credit. You also get the majority of the blame. If anything goes wrong, it's your fault. Any casualties, become your burden.
