This time instead of waking up to the light casting through her curtains, she woke to the obnoxious sound of her alarm. At least she wasn't going to be late this time. She turned off her alarm and sat up rubbing her eyes. It was 8 o'clock so she had about 45 minutes to be out of her apartment. She got up and walked to the bathroom. After she finished in there she went to the kitchen and grabbed a banana and a protein bar and returned to her room. She sat at her desk and combed her hair, it wasn't too messy so she passed it a couple times with her hair straighteners. She plastered on her makeup, she always liked makeup so she got into a routine, it almost always looked good as it did today.
After she changed into her outfit. It was tanned slacks, a baggy white button down with the sleeves rolled up and black half heels as she was already 5"8. She spritzed herself with her favourite fragrance and grabbed her handbag. She left the apartment at 8:47am, her long dirty blonde hair swishing as she left.
She arrived at her work building, she worked for a company that deals with high-tech security her job is to read emails and find clients. The job in which she has now is the 'beginner' job as such. The assistant would be a big step up.
"Hi, Kathleen, how are you today?", Julia greeted the receptionist as she waited for the elevator.
"I'm great thanks for asking. How are you?", she replied.
"Yeah I'm great too, I'm not late this time at least!", Julia joked.
"Haha you're right on that one! I'll talk to you later Julia", Kathleen finished.
"Yeah, I'll catch up with you later.", Julia replied as she stepped into the elevator. She pressed the button to the 4th floor. She stepped off the elevator and walked to her desk, the memory of yesterday came flooding back and she got a bit agitated again. But she wasn't going to let that ruin her day.
As she sat organising her things, a deep, intruding voice rumbled from directly behind her. This was a voice that made her freeze, made her stomach flip and her face redden.
"Ms Ross", the voice said.
She turned around to her boss, Alex, standing very close. Julia stood to meet his hight, although he was 6"1 and she was 5"8.
She composed herself before saying: "Mr Davis, may I help you?".
"No good morning? Hah.", he joked grimly. It was like he never told a joke before. Julia has never heard him crack a joke and almost didn't believe it.
"Hah, well good morning then", she said "how may I help you?".
"Hm, yes I would like to see you in my office", his tone shifted.
"Alright that is no problem", she said still standing in front of him.
"Now.", he commanded.
Julia, as if under hypnosis, walked behind Alex to his office. When he entered his office (Julia following) he went immediately behind his desk but did not sit down, Julia decided to stay standing too. He rested his
hands on the desk and leaned forward a bit."Take a seat.", he began.
"What's this about anyway?", Julia asked.
"It's about yesterday.", he replied.
"Oh not this again.", she was really not in to mood to talk about this again.
"No, no it's not a bad discussion, in short I have decided to select you as my new assistant. Jessica, my old assistant, decided it was a good idea to leave with barely any notice.", he rolled his eyes.
She couldn't believe it.
"You're kidding! I've got the job?!", she said excited.
"I don't like repeating myself.", he said rather sternly. She wanted to scream with happiness, she wanted to kiss this man for the opportunity...or some other reason but that's besides the point.
"Thank you Mr Davis, thank you so much. When do I start?", she asked determined.
"You may start today. And call me Alex from now on as you will be addressing me everyday.", he said unamused .
"Today!?", she asked shocked.
"I don't like repeating myself", he ironically repeated himself.
"Okay, okay sorry", she said attempting to calm herself down. She couldn't believe it, although she has a nagging feeling he wasn't going to be an easy man to work for. After they finished going over details, he told her he will need her basically on his every call. He will be calling her and texting her multiple times a day. She knew this wasn't going to be easy but she was determined, she needed the money anyway.
By the time 5'o clock came she was finishing up a few things while everybody headed out. Nearly all of Julia's coworkers had left by 5.30, it was only Alex and herself left, maybe a couple people just leaving. Although Julia was still moving her desk things to her new desk outside Alex's office. His door was left ajar and she could just catch his profile. He was sitting behind his desk, loosened tie and his top button undone. Stress marked over his broad shoulders and tanned skin. He was on the computer, typing. 'He must always be stressed, I mean I wouldn't mind if i had to look at him like that everyday', she thought. He looked ruffled... and hot.
She was finishing up organising her space, continuously taking glances of him. While placing her pens, her last possessions, on her desk she took a look through the crack. Suddenly he looked up from his computer, unsmiling and emerald green eyes like daggers, he must have felt her gaze. He held her stare for what felt like eternity before logging off his computer and standing, gracefully of course. Julia had butterflies in her stomach, she was tidying up as fast as she could so she could get out before he came out of his office. Alex, still unsmiling, approached the rushed Julia.
"In a hurry, are we?, he said in attempt to make a joke.
Julia was placing the last couple papers into a drawer before she looked up into his eyes. She could feel her insides turning.
"I just want to get home for dinner that's all", she replied.
"Right, dinner." he said roughly.
There was a stretch of staring and silence. Something in Alex's eyes was different, a teeny tiny glint could be seen. Julia wasn't sure what it was.
"Well I better go, Alex..." Julia said after a while.
"Yes, you should. I expect much from you Julia. Do not let me down." he said almost as a threat as he blinked away the tiny glint in his eyes and they returned to coldness.Julia watched him walk away, she was left in silence. She couldn't tell but there was something different about the way he looked at her and the way he said her name. She fears that her slight attraction to him may lead to problems that might affect her work, especially now as she is at his every call...
