Tara's P.O.V
Another boring day of digging, nothing really exciting happened, other than Mr Sir refusing Caveman and I water. I sighed, getting out of the showers and start heading back to the cabin, my eyes trailing to Zig-Zag who walked by shirtless to who knows where, probably the rec room. I made my way in the tent, humming suspiciously as Caveman and Zero quickly put something away and tried poorly to act natural. I raised a brow and stepped closer.
"Show me." I order with my hand stretched out. Caveman sighed before pulling out some paper, Zero looking down shyly. I looked at him confused at first by his reaction, looking at the paper more to fully comprehend what they were doing. On the paper there was Zero's name, repeatedly written, written in two sets of handwriting. I hand the paper back.
"What's this for?" Caveman looks to Zero for permission, me waiting for the okay just as patiently. He nods.
"I, uh. I'm teaching him how to read and write." Caveman says while looking down, like he was embarrassed himself.
"Okay. Make sure you go over the vowels, okay? Can't spell without knowing those." I joke to lighten the mood, both smiling dully. I make my way to my cot, sitting down to watch them work, seeing as I had nothing better to do anyways.
"If it gets too difficult though, I'd be happy to help." Stanley gives an appreciative smile, but Zero's eyes stay for an extra minute after he slowly looks up. I was curious as to what he was thinking, did he think I was making fun of him, or was he just not used to people helping him? His look didn't seem to be of either and both at the same time. Stanley gestures for his attention, getting him to focus on the work before him, snapping the younger boy from thought.
"Alright, that's an 'r' and then 'o.' That's it." Caveman smiled as he praised Zero for the good work as they pulled away from the paper. I smiled, leaning back on the cot as I felt an odd amount of pride in the boy.
"You know, Zero's not my real name?" Zero said out of nowhere, his eyes trailing from Stanley to me. I pause for a second, feeling suddenly bad that I hadn't even given it much thought until now.
