i think i got an ex, but i forgot him
~ Nonsense, Sabrina Carpenter
it was loud with chatter and music blaring through the speaker. you had been standing in the kitchen, leaning on the middle island, drink in your hand and elbows holding you up. "it was so exhausting, seriously. i don't understand a word that kid says," you complain. "it's just something you get used to. you eventually learn Inumaki's language," Shoko says, patting your shoulder. "i know, i know. it's just... everyone seemed to grasp it so fast. i've been here for what? 4 months now and i feel like i don't understand a thing. how pathetic. what kind of teacher am i?" you lay your head on the countertop, a sigh of frustration escaping your lips. "well, on the bright side, at least you work with Nanami now!" Shoko wiggles her brows at you. you lift your head, looking down into your drink. "yeah... Nanami," you swirl the liquid in the cup before downing the rest of it. you and Nanami had been dating for almost a year now, you had been paired up on a mission a while back and instantly connected. despite his seemingly cold demeanor, he was actually a sweetheart and truly cared about the well being of everyone around him. however, things haven't been the best since you started working here. something kind of switched, you both had become more distant, at least romantically. when you'd talk in the halls it felt more like friends rather than a couple. at this point, you felt it was safe to say you both were losing interest in each other but were far too scared to hurt the other. "Y/n! Shoko!!!" a voice vibrates heartily behind you. you turn your head over your shoulder to see the blindfolded man approaching the two of you. "Gojo! what's up, dude!!!" Shoko says, smacking his back as hard as she could, causing the man jump a little. "ah, not too hard Shoko, you know i'm more of the gentle type," he pokes his tongue out at her with a wink. she rolls her eyes at him and walks off to join in a game taking place in the living room. "not even a goodbye?" he frowns as the two of you watch her turn the corner. he shrugs, turning his attention back to you. "you look down, Y/n," he notices your gloomy mindset. "just tired, is all," you respond, leaning into the counter. "Nanami again?" he asks, you don't respond, just looked down at the floor. "where is he anyway? you both came here together, right?" he asks another question, looking around for any sign of him. "don't know, he walked off. but yeah, him again. at this point i think we've unofficially broken up," you sigh. you've known Gojo for as long as you could remember, he's actually the one who introduced you to Nanami. he was supposed to go on the mission but something bigger came up and he swapped out with Nanami. if Satoru had gone that day... i wonder... Gojo sighs, pulling you into a hug. you're shocked for a moment but relax fairly quickly. "i'm sorry, Y/n. he really is a good guy, i swear. he's just... i don't know. i don't have any excuse," he says just loud enough for you to hear. your forehead rested just at his shoulder. you could feel tears welling up in your eyes. you really liked Nanami, but if things were going the way it was then maybe it was for the best.
the next evening, you were on your way to Nanami's office. you stopped in front of the door, hesitating for a moment before knocking. "come in," you hear him say from the other side. you open the door, stepping into the familiar room. he looks up from his desk, a little surprised to see you. "i think we should talk," you start, walking up to his desk. with curious eyes, he motions for you to take a seat, which you respectfully decline. he nods, he was never much to question what you did, just accepted what you did as is. one thing you'd miss about him, he always respected your choice if it meant you weren't in danger. "i think we should break up," you say without a second more wasted. his face doesn't change at all. "do you believe that's best?" he asks. him questioning you only made it harder as you nod, looking down at his hands that were propped on his desk. "to put it bluntly, i think we're both better off as friends. things have changed since i started working here and i know you see it, too. i'm sure you also believe it's best if we just end it now rather than continue something neither of us want to for the sake of sparing the other's feelings," you look at him trying to keep yourself calm, but your throat was burning from the tears you were trying desperately to hold back. you knew Nanami could tell once he broke eye contact. "you're right. i'm sorry, Y/n. i couldn't be what you needed," he says, refusing to look back up. "it's not your fault. we can't control how we feel. i'll see you around, then," you turn to leave, closing the door behind you, you let out a shaky breath as the tears finally start to fall.
it's been 4 months since the break up, you were standing at the small bridge over the water on campus, staring down into the pond below you. "Y/n~!" a voice sang your name, you look over to see Gojo walking up, waving with a big smile plastered on his face. he had been very clingy since you had broken up with Nanami, always at your side making sure you were okay. "hey, Satoru," you greet. you couldn't deny that his presence made you feel safer, better. though you weren't sure if it was because he was always caring or because he was the strongest sorcerer and anybody next to him would be a million times safer with him around. perhaps a mix of both. "wanna grab lunch?" he asks, standing next to you, his hands stuffed in his pockets as usual. you look back at the water, "no thanks, i already ate. you go on without me," you say. "aw, but i packed a picnic and everything," he says pouting. you look at him confusion flushing over your face. "a picnic? for just you?" you ask, laughing a little. he grabs your hand, pulling you back to the building, clearly taking you to his office. you step in, seeing everything laid out on his office floor. "i know it's not outside, but i wasn't sure how else to do the surprise," he says happily, closing the door and bringing you to the center of the room the blanket had been laid out at.
there were candles lit around the room, food and drinks placed out on a small table next to the blanket. he gently pulls you to the floor, as you're looking at everything. "do you like it?" he asks giddily, a big smile across his face. you look at him, taking your eyes off the food. "Satoru, this," you pause looking around again. he bites his bottom lip, seemingly nervous of your reaction. you look back at him, "why would you do all of this?" you ask, feeling an overwhelming amount of emotions surging through you. he clearly planned this out. did he do this for me? why would he go through so much trouble. you could feel your face getting hot from the sudden realization of how you were feeling. "Y/n, i-," he stops himself, looking over at the food. despite being very confident in character he couldn't bring himself to look at you. you just stared at him, eyes wide from your own thoughts as everything hits you at once. "i like you, Y/n. i have for a while now," he says finally looking at you. you hold your hand over your mouth, lowering your head trying to hide your blush. you were so sure he could see it even in just candle light. you were so lost in thought and what he said you hadn't responded. "it's okay, if you don't feel the same. it's just that, i was going to tell you a while ago and then, well.. you started getting close to Nanami and it just didn't feel right. then you started dating and even now doesn't feel right since you just broke up not too-," "i like you too, Satoru!" you blurt out before you could catch yourself. "well, damn," he says, shocked before chuckling. "that's a relief, huh?!" he says, his body relaxing. your face was more red than before. why did i just say that?! couldn't you have said it better?! come on, Y/n! he leans across the blanket to you, placing his hand on your cheek, a soft smile spread across his face. "i was kinda bummed when Yaga told me i couldn't go on that mission with you and sent Nanami instead," he admits, his confidence clearly back in play. "let's eat, okay?" he says, rubbing your cheek with his thumb. he can definitely tell i'm blushing so hard right now. you nervously bite your lip as you stare at him, "o-okay," you stuttered, nodding your head.
