The engines tried everything to keep their promise. For the next few weeks, the trio worked tirelessly to have the harbour finished in time! Often, they'd be up well into the crack of dawn, just working. They'de return home late, and wake up early. The other engines began to become concerned.
"I've never seen anyone so tired.." Zorran conceded. "I know they have a deadline to meet, but this is absurd!"
"Are ye sure ye dinnae neit help?" Donald added.
"No thank you." Smiled Edward sweetly. "We'll manage!"
"But can you be so sure!?" Edna snapped. "My god, it looks like you haven't slept in weeks!"
"We have." Insisted an exhausted Skizz. "Even if it hasn't been long."
"And how about your crew!?" Donald's driver grunted, turning to his withered coworkers.
"Pssshhh!" Bubbles giggled, not being affected in the slightest. "Look at us! We're fine!"
"Speak for yourself.." Misty huffed. "I can barely stay on my feet."
"Surely, we can help!" Paxman pleaded. "You don't have to keep doing this alone!"
"We're fine, I assure you." Edward felt himself growing more agitated. Maybe he did need a rest. "Besides, the jobs almost completed. No reason to stop now."
"If you're sure." Zorran grumbled.
"Juist, please tak care o yourself, alricht lad?" Donald added.
"Of course." The old blue engine yawned in reply.

"Days of endless work, and we still won't make it!?" York cried, his face as solum as solum could be. The manager nodded.
"I've run the calculations." She explained. "And assuming one of you doesn't crack a wheel in the process, we'll still be a few days behind."
"But how can that be!?" Princess wailed. "We've been working so hard!"
"That's not fair!" Dawn added. The manager sighed.
"Look, I'm sorry to be the one who tells you this, but life isn't like it's portrayed in your stories. It isn't a fairy tale, and life doesn't always go your way." York and his crew looked down sadly at the rails. York felt dreadful! He felt just as bad as he brought his trucks into the harbour. Edward was at the nearby water tower, while Skizz backed some trucks into the sidings.
"What's with you?" Kate asked. York just sighed.
"We just spoke to Norma." He explained. "She's told us, despite everything, we won't be able to get the harbour completed by the grand opening."
"It's to be expected, really." Edward sighed. "All the setbacks have taken a lot of time out of our way. If we bomb rush it, then it'll turn out rubbish."
"Then we'll just have to work even harder!" The two engines turned their attention to Skizz.
"That's impossible!" Sayori grumbled. "We're already worked to the bone as it is."
"Not it's not!" Skizz stood definitely. "Listen to yourselves! Are you ready just to give up!? Come on, we're engines of The Fat Controller's Railway! York, do you remember what you said about Edward, before he left for the petrol shipment!?"
York pondered for a moment.
"No?"
"Well, me neither. But that's besides the point!" Skizz let out a big cloud of steam. "We aren't quitters! And if we have to work even harder, than so be it!"
"But what about our crews!?" Edward argued. "What about them!?"
"No sense in not trying!" Bubbles squeaked. "Skizz is right, right guys?"
There was a quiet murmur from the crowd.
"What do you say guys, do you want to stand with me!?" There was a long pause, before Edward sighed.
"Oh, if you insist!" A smile slunk onto his face. "Who am I to say no!?"
Skizz looked to York.
"What about you, old buddy?"
".. Oh, alright!" York couldn't help but smile at Skizz's infectious spirit. "I'll do it!"
"With a team like this, we'll have it done in no time!" Skizz gloated. "Just watch us!"
The other engines and crew just chuckled. Skizz was fired up, determined.

They did just as Skizz said. Sleep became a distant memory, as the engines were up for days on end, bringing in trucks of supplies from all angles! At last, the job was nearly complete!
"Well, would you look at that!" Edward beamed. "It's done!"
"Not quite." Tutted the project manager. "We still need one last train of rails and sleepers for the last of the yard."
"And how come one of us isn't up there, collecting the trucks right now!?" Skizz blurted out. Norma just chuckled dryly.
"Because the shipments not ready." She clapped her hands together. "Now, I'll wake you lot up when it is, but for now, go and have a rest in the small sheds, alright?"
"Are you sure?" Princess yawned. Norma just nodded.
"Go, you lot need a r-" But she didn't even finish her sentence, as Skizz's snoring soon filled the air. Norma just laughed, and stolled back towards her workmen.
"Poor old things." She spoke softly to herself. Her smile only grew as she looked into the rising sun. The day of the grand opening, was here.
