percy stumbled back as the monster struck him and pip quickly unhooked her bow and arrow charm, and stabbed the spiked tail of the monster with an arrow.

"no, sweetheart!" echidna exclaimed.

"go!" annabeth shouted, ushering them out of the way while the monster was weak. percy clutched his shoulder as they ran through the hall and into another carriage. the police officers yelled out after them, but pip slammed the door between them shut, locking it.

pip quickly rushed over to percy, as she plucked out a long, thin barb from his shirt. he winced and scrunched his eyes shut for a moment, before opening them again.

"what is that?" he questioned.

pip inspected the barb in her hand, "it's a stinger."

"grover, do you know what kind of monster has one of those?" annabeth asked.

"i don't know. i mean, nothing good probably," he responded, panic evident in his voice.

"do you feel okay?" pip asked him, pressing her hand against his wound to stop any blood loss which may have been caused by the stinger.

"i think so, why? do you think it's poisonous or something?"

"i, um, am currently failing extension medic training, so i'm not entirely sure," pip responded honestly, feeling annoyed with herself. "i'm a daughter of apollo for gods sakes, i'm supposed to be good at this stuff." she huffed.

"it's okay, pip, really, i'll be fine," he smiled at her, causing her panic to slightly fade.

the officers continued to bang on the door and yell at them to open it.

"we gotta move," pip declared, grabbing percy gently by the arm and pulling him along beside her. annabeth and grover followed closely behind.

the train slowed to a halt, as a message rang out over the pa, alerting the passengers the train was making an unplanned stop. the group took advantage of this and quickly jumped out of the train, sprinting across to the other side of the railroads.

they spun around, checking to see if the monster was still chasing them. to their luck, there was no monster or woman following them, so they stopped to catch their breath.

percy gripped his shoulder tightly, "why isn't it still chasing us?"

"echidna said whatever she was hiding in that carrier, it's young. it won't venture too far from her mother. she's learning to hunt... and this seems like the hunting part."

"oh, well that's just wonderful," pip said bitterly, kicking at a rock near her foot.

"we aren't gonna be able to outrun them for very long," grover said.

"we don't need to, we just need a safe place to hole up," annabeth responded.

"some place safe," pippa echoed. "any ideas where we might find one of those?"

"i do. a sanctuary, dedicated to athena, built by one of her demigod children a long time ago," annabeth explained.

"there is an athenian temple hidden somewhere in the middle of downtown st. louis?" percy asked, doubt written on his face.
