I've always liked living in Kenya since I was a little girl. I've lived there all my life so you could say North Shore is a huge change in scenery.. not to mention only knowing your mom and sister since you were a baby doesn't make the move any easier.
North Shore is just like any other typical town I have read about.. or that Cady has told me about. She's more of a book girl than me. I prefer exploring new places and learning through experiences, not books.
But here I am sitting in an english classroom, reading poetry from an unusually large book. Mr.Sawyer has absolutely no clue how to teach this class, not to mention almost all of the kids are asleep. My mom did a much better job.
"Ellie, since you seem so intrigued by Shakespeare, why don't you tell us what he meant in this poem?" Mr.Sawyer calls on me.
"Uh, it's actually Elle."
"Oh, my apologies, miss Elle. Go on."
I grimace and sigh before explaining the poem to the teacher and the sleeping teenagers.
An hour later, I finally get to go to lunch. Cady sits with me and begins telling me about her day as we walk to the cafeteria together. I don't have much to say, nothing has happened.
Once we enter the cafeteria, we notice there's absolutely no spots for us to sit.. so we settle for the bathroom.
That is until a girl named Janis and a boy named Damien decided to scout us out and bring us back to the cafeteria to help us find our "cliques"
"There's the jocks.. art geeks.. band nerds.." Damien tries to hide his wince when he points at the different cliques.
"Who's that over there?" I ask, pointing to two girls dressed head to toe in pink.
Damien gasps, "That's Gretchen Wieners. She knows everything about everyone.. that's why her hair is so big."
"And that's Karen Smith, the stupidest girl to ever live." Janis says. "We call them the plastics."
"Because they are shiny, fake, and hard." Damien explains.
"They don't seem that bad. Maybe we should sit with them, Elle!" Cady says with a smile but it drops when Damien and Janis stand in front of us.
"Do not do that." Janis begins, "You do not want to be friends with them."
"Especially not the queen bee, Regina George."
As soon as he says her name, it almost seems as if the lights flicker. Everyone goes completely silent, the only sound you can hear are heels clicking on the tiled floor.
I turn around and lock eyes with a green eyed blonde. She doesn't hide her scowl as she looks me up and down in disgust. I glare right back as she joins her two friends, all wearing different shades of pink.
"Please tell me you didn't make eye contact with her." Janis grabs my arm tightly, almost as if to warn me.
"She seems like a bit-"
"Hey you!" I am cut off by Regina George. "Yeah you, come here."
I begin walking over to her and her friends without a second thought, Cady follows me but Damien and Janis stay at their table.
"I've never seen you around here before?"
"I'm new. Me and my sister just moved here from Kenya." I explain, trying to sound friendly but this girl just sounds like a-
"No way! Isn't that in Africa?" Gretchen speaks up, cutting off my thoughts. "That is so fetch."
I flash her a confused expression before Regina turns to look at her, "What is fetch?"
"It's.. slang! For-"
"Whatever, I don't care." Regina says, waving her hand to dismiss Gretchen. "New girl-"
"It's Elle."
Regina rolls her eyes. "Elle." She sighs, "If you would have let me finish my sentence, you would've known I was talking to your sister. Not you."
I am about to say something but Janis grabs my arm and pulls me away, leaving Cady alone at the table with the plastics.
