September 2002, Akron, Ohio

THE BLANK SHEET of paper was staring right back at cienna from the place it was laying over the desk of her room. She had been sitting in that exact same spot for over half an hour, her body was starting to feel sore but she still stayed there. Because she was determined to finish that homework. A homework that had been hidden in the back of her class notebook for the entire week and had finally seen the light.

Cienna sighed and forced herself to press the her pen under the large title that read 'MY FAMILY', but she couldn't write anything. It wasn't because she didn't want to talk about her mom, because she loved her mom and she was proud of her, but it was about how she had no one else to write about.

She groaned, letting the pen slip out of her grip as she rested her head against the wooden surface of the desk. Why, oh why, had she been cursed with the worst father of the world?

Her thoughts were cut short by a soft knock over the surface of the door of her room and she groaned, not wanting to have the same conversation about this assignment with her mom.

"I'm not in the mood, mom!" She exclaimed, not bothering to raise her head from her desk.

She heard the door opening anyways and Cienna rolled her eyes and finally decided to look up. Nevertheless, on the door was standing Jesse. his backpack still hanging from his shoulders and a side smile on his face.

"Not even for the most amazing best friend in the world?" He said with a shrug of his shoulders as he walked in and closed the door behind him. "Your mom let me in."

"Yeah, I guessed so. It was either that or you breaking our lock, and I know that you haven't learned how to do that yet."  Cienna joked, watching how Jesse moved inside her room like it was his own.

He took off his shoes and let his backpack fall right next to hers on the floor, before finally throwing himself over Cienna's bed and grabbing her stuffed giraffe to play.

"Mom said that you weren't feeling well." He informed her, which made her groan slightly because she didn't want everyone knowing how much this whole thing was affecting her. "So, what's going on?"

Cienna shrugged, playing with the bracelet that Jesse had gifted her a few years ago as she murmured. "I don't wanna talk about it."

Jesse stayed silent for a few seconds, but Cienna could still feel his eyes on her. The bed creaked when he moved towards her, sitting up from his position and placing his body at the edge of the bed. He linked his ankle with hers to call her attention, which worked because her brown eyes finally met his green ones.
