"WANNA FIND OUT?"

His words echoed in your mind, but you didn't have time to answer as the front door slammed open with enough force to make you jump. Your head whipped around, a panicked expression on your face. A feeling of dread settled in your stomach at the sight of your boyfriend. He appeared distressed, hair disheveled from constantly running his fingers through it— something you noticed he only did when he was upset. When his eyes landed on your form, you could see a visible wave of relief wash over his features.

"Y/n! There you are, I was looking everywhe—" He paused, hazel gaze flitting between your rubescent complexion and the smug male sitting awfully close to your side. The relieved look in his eyes was quickly overshadowed by one of ire. "Who's this?"

"Nobody!" You said, putting on your best smile, hoping to diffuse his anger. "I just needed some air," you explained softly. And it just about worked, his hardened expression was softening before your eyes.

Until the brunette decided to chime in.

"Been a while, Kirschtein."

There was a far-off look in Jean Kirschtein's eyes as he loomed over the two of you. His towering height, which you normally found attractive, now made you want to shrink away in fear.

"Jaeger," was all Jean said after a tense moment of silence, jaw clenched and shoulders rigid. The subtle glare in his eyes made you realize that he was probably reliving old memories. Unpleasant ones at that.

Your heart lurched at the sudden realization that these two knew each other. You almost laughed at the sheer ridiculousness of it all but managed to bite your tongue instead. How you managed to wedge yourself between your boyfriend and a mysterious hot stranger, you weren't sure. But like a shadow, chaos always seemed to follow you.

"Quite a catch you've got here," the brunette, Jaeger, said smoothly. He snatched his blunt back from between your fingertips with little effort, raising it to his lips as they curled into a taunting smile. "Lucky I was here to look after her— you know how guys can be."

Jean's eyes narrowed. You could tell the brunette was pushing all his buttons, pulling at his strings like a sinister puppeteer. "Yeah? Lovely, isn't she?" he spat, suddenly grasping your arm and guiding you to your feet. "Too bad you can't keep her company any longer."

"Hey!" you protested.

Jean loosened his grip on you, allowing you to wriggle free. However, he stayed glued to your side, intense gaze never leaving the other male on the steps. If looks could kill. . .

"I can walk on my own," you huffed, although you found yourself grasping at his sleeve for support anyway, too drunk to balance on your own.

"I think you've had enough fun tonight, beautiful," Jean muttered in your ear. He made a point of giving Jaeger one last glare before steering you in the direction of his car.

You only made it a few steps before you were interrupted by his voice. You inwardly cringed, expecting Jean to lose it on the poor guy, but he managed to remain composed, merely staring off down the darkened street as his bicep flexed beneath your fingertips. You hesitantly looked over your shoulder, just to be met with those piercing jade eyes that made your heart flip.

"You dropped this," was all the brunette said, extending a large hand toward you. In it was your phone.

"Oh," you mumbled. It must have fallen from your pocket when Jean helped you up. As you retrieved it from his grasp, your fingers briefly brushed past one another. "Thanks," you said sheepishly. You quickly stuffed it into the pocket of your shorts.

With that your boyfriend continued walking, dragging you along with him on his way to the car. As you struggled to keep up with his large strides, you looked back, secretly hoping to see those green eyes once more, but he had disappeared.

"I'm sorry," Jean mumbled against your neck, pressing a soft kiss to your warm skin.

You lay in your bed, feeling dizzy as you stared up at the ceiling, unblinking. You tried to focus on the nice feeling of your boyfriend's lips on your neck, but your mind drifted elsewhere and his voice was inevitably drowned out by the intensity of your thoughts.

"Wanna find out?"

You let your eyes flutter closed. His words replayed over and over in your head, echoing in your ears like a broken record. You ran an index finger over your chin, trying to remember how it felt when he grasped it between his own two fingers. His lips so close to yours, you wondered what they would have tasted like. Probably sweet, you decided.

"Are you even listening to me?"

"Mmhm. ." you mumbled, completely out of it. You opened your eyes, blinking lazily. Your tired gaze was met with the familiar face of your boyfriend hovering above you, your smaller body caged between his strong arms.

"What did I just say?" Jean questioned, voice soft as a frown tugged on his lips. His expression was desperate, and he frantically searched your face for any scrap of sincerity.

"Um. . .I love you. . ?" you said, a small giggle escaping your lips.

Jean looked away, auburn locks of hair obscuring your view of his eyes as his shoulders stiffened. He let out a shaky, frustrated sigh and rolled off of you, settling on his side with his back to you.

"Love you too," he mumbled, despite knowing that you had already fallen fast asleep.
