NOVEMBER IS THE LONELIEST MONTH.

The days drag on, each of them blending together until you can no longer discern one from the other. Skies that were once blue become cloudy and grey, and the sun retreats below the horizon much earlier than before.

Everything is a little quieter in November.

Even the songbirds, whose melodies were once proud and boisterous, were now drowned out by the melancholic wails of the common crow.

You sat with your legs dangling between the metal railing of the fire escape, watching the evening traffic go by your apartment building. The bitter air easily penetrated the thin fabric of your pajama pants, but you were reluctant to go inside. The fire escape was your safe place, a little hideaway where you could retreat from the chaos of everyday life.

And right now you were doing just that, hiding from it all.

You were lost in thought, hardly aware of the chill on your skin as you pondered the possibility of going out tonight. Eren's invitation to that party had been lingering in the back of your mind all week, and now that it was Friday, you couldn't put off the decision any longer.

To go or not to go?

You let out a lazy sigh, watching as your breath turned to mist from the cold. You would be lying if you said you weren't tempted by his offer. You could use a little break from reality.

The past few days have consisted of nothing but work and class, leaving you burnt out and unmotivated to do anything but lay around. You didn't even have the energy to talk to Jean, who hasn't been giving you much of his attention anyway.

Strangely, he's been glued to his phone almost all week, smiling to himself about who knows what. After a few days of listening to him laugh under his breath, you grew tired of his secret endeavors. The blunt question rolled off your tongue, cold and spiteful:

"What's so funny?"

His thumbs typed a hidden message. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips, betraying an otherwise stoic expression.

"Nothing."

You haven't really spoken to him since then, choosing instead to busy yourself with distractions of your own. Studying and the occasional text from Eren had you mostly occupied, preventing your mind from lingering too long on Jean and whatever he was up to.
