The sound of a horse-drawn carriage filled the empty alley between the tall buildings. Bertholdt and I hung onto the back of the carriage. My gaze shifted to Bertholdt who was still looking at the road ahead, confirming whether his direction was correct or not. Once he signaled with one hand, we both jumped silently.

"Around here?"

"Yes, but be careful. It's dangerous here."

I just nodded. The two of us walked straight where the view of the uninhabited buildings earlier finally gave way to a fairly large field after passing through the wall. We were outside the walls of Shina now, precisely between the Stohess district and the outer Orvud. I don't know how far we are now. All I know is that it's very dark out here and could make a child our age cry with fear. Not to mention the tense atmosphere, even though it's only night time.

"Watch your step, Reiner. There are many traps here."

"Are there any wild animals out here?"

Bertholdt looked at me, "No. They're not. But traps to keep those kids from running away."

Bertholdt's words made me clench my fists angrily. How cruel could they be? As if he knew I had other feelings, Bertholdt only said two words and it instantly brought me back to normal.

"Focus, Reiner."

We continued walking, because it was very dark, and also the field slowly became a silent forest, the silent forest turned into a field again, with an old and quite majestic building there.

"We've arrived..."

"Is this-..."

"Yes, this is the church where they worship that cruel and disgusting King Rod." My gaze only glanced at the movements of Bertholdt who was rubbing the scars on his body from the outside of his clothes.

Ah, one moment. There are only a few buildings here. How do we find Annie? I don't even know where Annie will be taken. And it could even be that every building is inhabited.

"...Is this safe? I mean is there anyone?" I asked without taking my eyes off the surroundings.

"It's not safe, and I don't know."

I just sighed in response. When it came to Annie, Bertholdt could be more assertive and arbitrary with me. It wasn't like I was with Bertholdt, but that's how it was. Because basically my best friend liked his other best friend. I knew that Annie had realized Bertholdt's feelings long before Bertholdt expressed his feelings later.

"Bertholdt, I think we should-..."

"No, Reiner. We can't split up this time. I know better than you what this place is, so I'll decide."

I was silent because Bertholdt knew what I was thinking right now. I really intended to split up to make the search mission easier. After all, this place was huge. Although there were only a few buildings, it was possible that there were hidden and more dangerous places. So I would obey Bertholdt this time.

We decided to continue moving, going from building to building. But those buildings only contained beer and empty barrels, some buildings only contained weapons. And we could only check from the windows because everything was locked.

If there's no one and it's this quiet, it's impossible because there should be tons of children calling for help or the sound of a few adults making small talk. There were many traps out here, but why was this place as deserted as if it had never been touched by humans? My suspicions were rising about the hidden place.
