I like how each new part introduced to the book has a quote from a character. Part 3's quote is from Lorn au Arcos.

People keep questioning Darrow's motives. Suspecting him of having other motives or masters, which he does. He has to tread carefully before he is found out.

I am transfixed by Lorn's retelling of history like I am actually there speaking with the man. When Darrow betrays him I am sad. There's always something with Darrow, a betrayal without meaning actual harm to the person or persons he is betraying. He considers Lorn his friend so he made precautions to protect him and his kin, but not without dragging him into something he didn't want.

I am not sad when Tactus dies. I'm almost happy.

Brown's dialogue style is an interesting one. In the middle of dialogue he'll put, 'I ask Mustang if she's injured.' He does this without actually putting dialogue in quotes.

Sevro is such a great character. He is commanding of his Howlers yet loyal to Darrow. I wouldn't call him respectful, especially after he spit in Darrow's face, but he respects Darrow's role.

The tension between Mustang and Darrow is interwoven between action and strategy scenes. It isn't in your face or in every chapter, which keeps me interested in their love. He wants to trust her with the truth but it is a difficult.

Allegiances are so easy and quick to shift in politics. Whoever is the most powerful at that current moment will have the bannermen. When that head is lopped off, they follow whoever did the beheading. Literally and figuratively.

They seem to think this battle will decide the war in a day. It very well may, but it also may spread over a few books since Brown extended the series.
