As a young child, he never understood it.

They barely remembered it.

It seemed normal, life in an orphanage.

Then one day, when he turned 10, they got to go home.

"Home," Kai had told Nya, "where dad would make awesome swords and mom would cook. Where we would play in the yard. Where we will live someday."

They both knew that when Kai turned 10, they could go back home. Finally that day had come. They had a whole house to themselves! The neighbors brought them food, and Kai and Nya could walk to school five days a week, and on the weekends they could play outside some.

It was amazing.

Until it wasn't.

"What? No, you can't do that, we're fine here."

"This is the law now. Things have changed. It will be better this way."

"I said, we're fine here! Now go away!"

"Sorry, son, but this is the way it has to be. Does your sister have her things packed?"

"No! This is stupid! She's not packing anything!"

"Have her get her things. Please don't make this difficult for us."

"I'm telling you, she's not coming with you."

The officer knelt to his level. "Son, I am sorry. But this is the law now, and you have to follow the law. You'll still see each other. But this way, you'll both be taken better care of."

"DON'T CALL ME SON!" Kai yelled, and stormed back into the house.

"Kai, what's going on?" asked a wide-eyed Nya, standing in the entryway.

"N-nothing," Kai said, marching into the kitchen where he started pacing back and forth. "Nothing." He leaned on the counter and fought the tears that stung his eyes. A lump formed in his throat. He wiped his face before turning and seeing the officer standing in the doorway.

"I told you to go away," he said through his teeth, tears forming again. "Do you have any idea what you are doing to us?"

"Kai?" Nya asked, "why is he here?"

"To take you to a place where you can be taken care of better," the officer answered.

"They want to take you away, Nya," Kai said, voice breaking.

"No!" she gasped, and ran to her brother, burying her face in his shirt.

"Please, sweetie, pack up your things. This is the law, okay?"

She glared back. "I'm not a baby."

"I know..."

----------

Kai gasped and sat up suddenly, waking up in a cold sweat. He thought he wouldn't have that nightmare anymore.

Well, it wasn't a nightmare. It was the truth.

Which means that his life is a nightmare...

Nya.

He just wanted his sister back. He had to protect her, and he couldn't protect her now that she was gone.

He shivered as his bare feet touched the cold floor when he slid out of bed. Too cold. He slipped through the dark into the kitchen where he got a glass of milk, then went back to his warm bed to try to get some more sleep...

----------

Now he was thirteen. Thirteen and starting a blacksmith shop. Thirteen and waiting for his sister to come home.

They said she could come home when he was thirteen...

He'd visited her every chance he got.

Now she could come home.

----------

The car drove up the dirt road, going unnoticed by Kai. She got out, carrying a couple bags, her long silky black hair blowing slightly in the wind.

"Kai!" she called, hurrying up the walk towards the blacksmithing area. He turned around from his work, and spotting her, ran to meet her. She dropped all the luggage to hug him.

"You're home!" he exclaimed.

"I'm home," she sighed contentedly.

No one's ever going to take her from me again, Kai thought.
