May"Now spill." Brooklyn said sitting comfortably on my bed.
We were at my house, both in our pajamas. Brook had brought a change of clothes for the next day so I guess she decided that this would be a sleepover. My parents never minded her staying over and my little brother would even treat her like a second sister. I finished typing up my hair, putting on my bonnet and taking a seat next to her.
"Ok so," I started. "the other day after we had left the library," I said and she nodded, actively listening. "I may have gone to a party."
She gasped, hitting my shoulder.
"With Devin." I added.
"Girl, what the fuck? Why?" She exclaimed.
"Because he asked me to! And before you say it, I know it was a weekday but he practically begged me to go." I continued, realizing just how dumb I sounded.
"And you already know how I felt about him." I added.
"Felt? What happened?"
I told her what I had witnessed, recalling
memories that did not fail to make my blood boil. Brook was spazzing, going through a whole range of emotions."Girl fuck him, that's what happens when you don't raise kids right." She huffed.
"Brook, you're talking about your Dads sister, aka his Mom." I reminded her in an obvious manner.
"Yeah she obviously didn't do a good enough job. You're lucky you have me, I'll talk to him myself." She stated as she hopped off the bed and made her way towards the dresser to grab her phone.
I quickly went after her, grabbing her arm.
"Don't B. He doesn't know that I saw him and frankly I don't want him to. Besides, what he chooses to do with himself does not concern me anymore. I'm over him." I admitted.
"And yesterday you weren't at school because..?" She inquired.
"I was angry." She crossed her arms. "And may have gotten drunk. But that's not important! Besides Chase took me home anyway." Brook raised an eyebrow at the last part but decided not to question it.
She dropped her phone, " Well pieces of shit like him don't deserve you anyway."
I chucked, "He's still your cousin." I stated matter of factly.
"Don't care!" She yelled as she ran out of my room and downstairs, later returning with a large bowl of popcorn.
"While I'm here, we might as well watch a movie." She said grabbing the remote and turning on the tv in my room. "I was thinking 'She's The Man'." She turned, looking back at me.
I nodded as we lied down and put on the movie.
•••
It was now Friday and Brook and I were walking the halls to our last class of the day.
Brook was going on about what her and her boyfriend were getting up to a few days ago not so quietly in the halls.
"Then he said bend over-" she started before she was cut off.
"May!" I heard a voice shout from behind.
Fuck.
"May," Devin said as he approached, reaching us. "Where you been, I was looking for you."
"You've got a whole lot of nerve!" Brook yelled, getting in his face and pointing a finger at his chest. He backed up a bit, confusion evident on his face.
"Brook, calm down." I said, grabbing her finger and pulling it down. She looked at me and I signaled to her with my eyes for her to give us space.
"Man, whatever." She exclaimed, flicking Devin off as she walked away.
"The fuck is up with her?" He asked watching her leave.
I turned to him and stayed quiet, staring him down while waiting to hear whatever bull he was about to spew.
"Look, what happened the other night? I couldn't find you anywhere after the party." He had the audacity to act worried.
"I obviously left." I started walking, having no intention of being late to class because of him.
He trailed behind me, "Okay... why?" He questioned.
"Doesn't matter." I stated blankly.
"It does matter and you should've come to find me, I said I would take you home." He disclosed, genuinely seeming concerned.
I scoffed, "Seems a little hard to do when you're busy with other bitches, huh?" I expressed.
"Wait, what?" He grabbed my shoulder, halting my movements. "May, tell me what happened."
I rolled my eyes, "Y'know maybe you should learn to lock the door when you're fucking in the same house as so many people. Who knows what they might see?"
He paused, and rubbed his head, obviously distressed. Not about what he did, but about the fact that I found out.
He didn't respond and I began walking again.
"May wait." I kept walking. "Look it's not like that. I don't even remember what led up to that point. I wasn't-".
"Just forget it Devin, I don't care. And I'm not gonna be late to class because of you."
He didn't follow me this time and I continued on to class, arriving just as the bell rung. I was seething with anger. Great, now my day is ruined.
Class had begun and I could not even pay attention. My mind continuously wandered back to Devin and his pathetic attempt to clear his name. All the time I wasted obsessing of him. At least it ended before I got wrapped up in more of his lies.
Brook leaned over to my seat, "Stop thinking about him." She said, seeing I was obviously bothered.
I nodded and tried to focus until the bell rung. I was so ready to get home and take a well deserved nap.
"See ya." I absentmindedly waved to Brook as I exited the class and headed to my car to head home.
