Chapter 3: Lu Ruxin's Dilemma

Now, their family consists only of her and Mom. Dad, who previously made money in business and climbed into the good graces of a Kyoto aristocrat, got them kicked out, and Mom became the scapegoat in a setup.

This forced her and her brother to become tough. If they hadn't stood their ground, brandishing knives and risking their lives, they wouldn't have been able to keep the small house they currently live in.

After her brother went to military school, she had to single-handedly protect the family. Any sign of weakness would invite mistreatment from their uncle's family.

While Lin Qiuping went out to buy food, Lu Ruxin closed her eyes to rest. The situation doesn't look optimistic – though they have no debts, there are no savings either. Life is becoming a problem.

Their family was never wealthy, but the critical illness ward drained their resources. The house was lost, savings depleted – a classic case of falling into poverty due to illness.

The cheap sale of their house was undoubtedly the work of their uncle. Leveraging Dad's influence in Kyoto, the Lu family held a significant position in Yecheng – no one wanted to cross them.

Uncle was cunning, obstructing other buyers and making their house undesirable. Besides lowering the price, they now owe him a favor.

Another issue is the college entrance exam. Considering the missed classes due to her prolonged illness, there's only about a month left until the exam. Missing so much school, even if she had good grades before, it's futile now. If she studies for another year, it will burden Mom, and if she gets in, the tuition is a problem.

Thinking about these real-life problems, Lu Ruxin couldn't help but feel a headache coming. She rubbed her head and noticed a faint halo on her pinky, with a subtle totem. It looked like a ring on her finger.

Thinking she was hallucinating, she poked the halo. "Don't poke; Grandma wants to sleep a bit more."

A little girl's voice echoed in Lu Ruxin's ears, startling her. Was she hallucinating voices too, despite the doctor saying she was fine?

A doctor checking her blood pressure explained the tingling in her pinky as stiffness due to lying down for a long time. The girl's complaints about Grandma's annoyance went unnoticed as the doctor moved on to other patients.

Surprised by the doctor's reaction, Lu Ruxin concluded it was a hallucination. She decided to endure it and not burden Mom further.

"Silly girl, it's not a hallucination. I am a spirit. The ring on your pinky is a beast ring. Since you woke me up, let's chat."

Lu Ruxin nearly exclaimed. What kind of fantasy event had she stumbled upon? People wake up to ghosts after fainting, is that what's happening to her?

"Silly girl, never mind the ghost talk. I don't quite remember how we formed a contract, but I'm weak now and need magical crystals to recover. Once I regain my strength, you'll see my form, and the beast ring will become tangible."

Lu Ruxin glanced around and whispered, "What are you talking about? Magical crystals? How did we form a contract?"
