In their 4th year Snape tried to hex James for flirting(or whatever the 14 year old version of it was) with Lily. He failed and ended up hexing himself and landing himself a spot in the hospital wing while James gloated to Lily about how strong he was and flexed for her(Which he regretted painfully later in life).
