As I reach my dimly lit house, I realize time has passed faster than I anticipated. And there on the porch is my mom, her face masked in that calmness I'll never get used to. Her eyes devoid of any emotion, rest on mine.

"what's the time Aurora?"

"Mama I'm sorry, lily and I got preoccupied with this thing and I forgot to keep track of time- "

"You like outdoors so much, don't you? No need to come inside then."

"I promise this won't happen again.", I plead although it's useless.

Before slamming the door in my face, she adds, "No dinner for three days. And you skip breakfast anyways, so at least that way you can lose all that weight you've gained since all you're capable of doing is sprawl on your bed after school hours."

Instinctively I pull at the hem of my sweater and avert my gaze. I sit on one of the chairs in the porch hugging my knees to my chest, my jacket barely helping with the freezing temperature. And somewhere between trying to keep myself warm and hating my life, I fall asleep.

I almost flinch at the reminder of the last time I stayed out just ten minutes past my curfew and quicken my pace.

Lily's words linger in my head as I head back home. Maybe it's time I had the talk with my mom about my future plans, even if just the thought of it fills me with dread.
