Five men sat at the round table, discussing matters concerning the church. Among them were Pastor Steve, Pastor Adam, and other junior pastors, including Mark.
"We are planning to organize a convention this year," Pastor Steve addressed them. "This convention is going to include prayer sessions, sermons, and other fun activities."
Mark diligently wrote down everything Pastor Steve said in his book.
"Excuse me, Pastor Steve," Adam interjected, raising his finger to draw attention to himself. "The church does not have enough funds to host such a large convention. Perhaps we should consider organizing a children's camp instead."
"I agree. A children's camp would help bring the little ones together," a junior pastor added, turning to look at Mark. "Isn't that right, Mark?"
"The children of this church don't spend much time together except during Sunday school, and I think that's deficient," Mark commented. "We are one big family in this church, so it's best we grow in unity."
"I'm in support of a children's camp," another pastor chimed in.
Pastor Steve let out a loud sigh. "I see where you are coming from," he said to them. "A children's camp it is then?"
They all affirmed.
"Your son would have been fit to lead them," Pastor Steve remarked to Mark. Mark paused for a moment, trying to process what Pastor Steve was saying.
"Excuse me?" Mark finally asked, looking at Pastor Steve.
"You are standing in for your father since he is away on an evangelical mission in Minnesota," Pastor Steve clarified. "I mean, you are a trustworthy man, and I believe that if you had a son, he could lead the children's activities."
Mark chuckled. "Pastor Steve, even if I had a son immediately after I got married, he would be three by now," he said.
"That's true," Pastor Adam acknowledged.
"Sorry, you know I'm old and all. I can't keep up with these things," Pastor Steve said, putting his palm on his forehead.
Mark relaxed in his chair, smiling at the older man. "I understand," he said. "However, I'm going to sponsor the camp. Every single thing. There's no need for donations or contributions. I have always said, if you guys need money, please come to me, there is nothing like asking for too much in the house of the Lord"
"Thank you Mark, you have been a blessing to the church at large"
After everyone left the conference room, Pastor Steve and Mark remained. They sat opposite each other in silence.
"You asked me to wait behind. Why is that?" Mark inquired, concerned.
"Mark, I'm sorry I'm intruding in your personal life, but your father and I have been best friends since we were little," Pastor Steve began.
"I'm aware of that, Pastor Steve," Mark replied softly.
"How old are you, Mark?" Pastor Steve asked.
"I'm thirty years old, Pastor Steve," Mark replied.
"And how old is Emily?"
"She's twenty-three or so," Mark answered. There was a moment of silence before Pastor Steve spoke again.
"You and Emily have been married for about four years now," he said. "Sorry to ask, but I believe you and Emily are young and healthy people. So why don't you have a child yet?"
Mark looked at the desk in silence, feeling embarrassed.
"It's fine if you don't want to answer. I mean... I'm sorry," Pastor Steve said gently.
