It was a Saturday morning, the streets were filled with people walking their pets, jogging, taking walks, or going to occasions. In the Smith's home, Mark sat quietly eating the food he had prepared when heard the doorbell ring. He stood from the dining hall and went to peep. He saw Donna. Yes, his wife's friend who he hardly had a conversation with. He unlocked the door and opened it. Immediately she saw him she smiled at him.
"Good Morning, Mr. Smith," she said with all her teeth flashing at him. Donna really respected Mark very much as Emily's husband. She counted Emily as a lucky woman for bagging a handsome, tall, fit, rich, and God-fearing young gentleman. "A Greek god" as she would always hail him teasing Emily.
Mark stared at her briefly and tried to remember her name.
"Donna?" He asked sounding unsure.
"Oh yes, Mr. Smith" she answered smiling.
"How are you doing? My wife talks about you all the time" he smiled
.
"I'm great sir" she replied with excitement.
"Cool..." he said still looking at her and wondering why she was here.
"I'm sorry is Emily home?" She asked looking worried.
"No, she's not, why?" He asked faking concern.
"Well Emily just got a promotion this week and ever since then, she hasn't come to the office or even called in," Donna said worriedly.
"A promotion?" He asked.
"Yes, hasn't she told you?" Donna wondered.
"Oh no..." he said shaking his head. "Well, Emily is not home, she traveled out to Michigan"
Donna gasped lightly still confused "For church reasons I guess," she said.
"Exactly" He affirmed.
"It's just that she hasn't called and HR has been trying to reach her but she's not answering her phone and..." Donna explained "I'm really worried, it's the fifth day"
"Oh really?" Mark acted surprised. "Well, she didn't take her phone with her and all so..."
"How do you reach her Mr. Smith?" Donna asked.
"I use the church phone lines to contact the head pastor she's with" he lied.
Donna looked at the environment and back at Mark. "Thank you for your time, Mr. Smith," she said and turned to walk away.
"I'll tell her you called," he said watching her walk away.
He didn't know if he convinced her or not. All that mattered was that she was gone now.
$&@$$&@
Mark looked at the test strip. As it had done in the past 10 days, the result was negative.
"Not pregnant," he said throwing it on the floor. "How difficult could it be? It's been ten days already!"
Emily wallowed in pain, her thighs were stained with blood. She was bleeding and in serious pain.
"I'm sorry" she cried and managing to speak, she begged him with the strength she had left in her "I'm trying my best..."
"I heard you got a promotion," Mark said cutting her sentence short. He ignored Emily who was in pain on the floor.
