It was dark now. Too dark to drive. The roads were long and civilisation was far.
"
We should pull over." Brandon said. He was different now. He had messy hair and he looked tired.
"Good idea" I said pulling into a thin road that lined off the road.
"Please tell me you brought food?" He said.
"Yes, Brandon" I said as the car stopped. "I brought food."
"Just saying" he said softly.
I climbed out the car, limbs aching from sitting for hours.
Our surroundings were just dirt and some bush. Mountains in the horizon stood tall and the sky was lit just enough to see.
"I think it's to dark to cook" he said stretching. "It's almost night"
"Yeah that's true." I said opening the boot and and scurrying through the bag of food we brought.
"Ok, chips or chocolate?" I said holding the two up.
"We're going to die out here, you do know that right?"
"Shut up" I said in a laugh throwing the two back in a bag.
Night fell and the only light we had was the fire that Brandon made.
We both sat on a blanket in our swags munching away on chips and chocolate. It wasn't the healthiest meal. But it was enough.
"It's so nice out here" I said gazing up at the stars.
"Yeah. I'm glad you asked me to come." He replied looking up himself. I looked over at him, he just looked up. Then looked at me.
I laid down on the blanket and continued to stare at the sky.
I could here Brandon lay down I his swag at least a metre from me.
It was dead silent and then he spoke.
"Truth or dare?"
"What?" I replied.
"Truth or dare? Come on"
"Uh, haha, truth."
"Uhh? Favourite colour?" He asked.
"Favourite colour? Really?"
"What?" He said like there was nothing wrong with it.
"We're in the middle of nowhere, no ones around you can ask better questions than that."
"Fine then. Why did you break up with me?"
I tended up. Did he really just ask me that?
I looked over at him. He rested his head on his hand watching me.
"You asked for 'better' questions"
Silence rose again and then I spoke. "Well, I just thought that I needed a family."
"Thought?"
"That I needed a family. I needed a family."
"Ok then" he replied.
"Truth or da-"
"Truth." He said before I could finish. "And ask a good one" he added.
"Fine" I said siting up. "How long did it take you to write outlaws."
"An hour" he replied like it was nothing. "An hour and a bit."
"Ok then." I Said laying down again.
We were silent again. And he later back down.
"I just need to say something." I said sternly. He gave me his full attention.
"I, I didn't just come to you when things were hard or bad for me"
He looked serious.
"I came to you because at those moments in time, you were the one I needed."
He gazed at me.
"And what about now" he began "do you still need me?"
Our eyes locked and words just fumbled out of my mouth.
"I think I'll always need you"
He smiled. " I know" he said softly with his eyes closed.
I watched him as I did when I ran away after we first kissed. It was clear to me that I still loved him.
If only he knew.
