Chapter 18: hearts on the walls

February was around the corner - naturally, the year was already going by so quickly. It was always around this time of year when there was whispers about Cupid's dance. It was an absolute spectacle of an event, and all the elves were always looking forward to the date. Even a few weeks up until the dance, people were planning their elaborate proposals and discussing who was going with who, and naturally drama would ensue every year with jealousy running rampant amongst those who didn't get to go with their desired partner to the dance.

The dance wasn't mandatory for anyone - except for Bernard, that was. It would obviously look bad if the head elf, the role model of all elves in the factory, was absent of these kinds of events. As much as it pained him, he had been every year since he became the head elf - and it had been a long couple of centuries.  He had been with a couple belles of his own, though nothing too serious - ladies were always trying to get a chance to say that they had been to the dance with the head elf himself, and they'd go straight back to a professional relationship the day after.

Justice was anxious for the dance. She and her friends went every year, and it was one of the only social events she really enjoyed going to, but even that was pushing it. Usually, she would go with Jaime, but...she didn't see that happening anytime soon, considering he hadn't spoken to her since the last time, and it didn't seem like he was wanting to before then.

So, with her whole schedule for this time of year thrown off, what on earth was she to do?

That particular day of the week - a few days before the start of February - she had been tending to the duties which had been bestowed upon her by Bernard, that being handing out report papers to all the head's of departments for them to fill out and then drop back off at Bernard's office by the end of the week. She had been getting a lot more familiar with all the heads of department, I mean, she already knew Dolly, head of stuffed animals, Felix, head of woodwork, and Joseph, head of delivery. But she was starting to become acquainted with a few more characters, like Lucia, head of painting, Teddy "Theodore" of mechanics. It felt good to actually know her co-workers, other than her fellow writers.

It was kind of depressing to walk through the factory this time of year, watching elves put up valentines day decorations, and working hard on cards and dance proposals rather than the work they were supposed to be doing. And not to mention that she had saved the worst department for last to deliver the paper - delivery.

As she did enter the delivery department, she prayed to whatever god she could that Jaime wouldn't be there, and if he was, that he wasn't the first face that she'd be met with. Luckily, those gods must have been listening at least a little bit, because she would be greeted by Joseph, the head of department, and another delivery boy - Harry.
