AMELIA POV
When Nikita and I sat down to supper that day, it was already late. Since she was exhausted and could not be bothered, I let her sleep the entire day. She was quiet, but it was obvious that she was no longer upset with me. I am aware that her current silence raises some strange questions.
Amelia, why are you staring at me in that way? Does my face have dirt on it?
I gave a quick shake of my head. Concerning what transpired last night, I have a lot of questions for her. I still do not know her all that well, even though we are friends. I am interested in learning more about her because I do not know much about her.
If I ask, will she be offended?
I was not sure. If I tried to ask Nikita some questions, perhaps she would later throw me out of her apartment. Although it is untrue, she might believe that I am meddling in her life. I am just worried. The only thing holding me back from doing that is that. I do not want her to become enraged over this issue again.
"I just wanted to know where you went yesterday, Nikita. Nothing special."
She looked at me as though she could read my expression and tell if I was being honest.
"You mentioned to us that you are having headaches. Have you visited the hospital? You should have told me sooner and brought me along, Nikita. You can always count on me. I am sure you understand what I mean.
She stopped eating as though my words were offensive in some way. She must have told me differently, but I know where she came from because of her cousin Rofus. Because I am curious about her, she might even conclude that I am not a good friend.
"I was just somewhere passing the time. You don't have to know the details.”
Her response made it clear to me that she was still reluctant to give me all of her personal information. I will provide that with my respect. Of course, I have to. I will just wait for her to tell me everything. Our friendship could be ruined if I put her under unnecessary pressure.
"All right, I get it."
After that, I ate in silence. I was occasionally observing as she ate. She ate in silence as well. Nikita does not appear to be in pain or as sluggish as yesterday. She seems to be the same person as she was.
"Amelia, when are you planning to return home?" She asked abruptly.
She asked me a question that nearly made my food get stuck in my throat. With haste, she gave me a glass of water. I took it and drank it right away. I cleared my throat with a cough. I immediately assumed this was my punishment for entering her room without permission.
"What makes you ask me that?"
To be honest, I was petrified to ask her that. My heart is racing as if I am in the middle of a trial.
"Are you throwing me out of your apartment because I entered your room earlier? I apologize for what I did. I swear I will not do it once more.
Our gazes locked as she glanced at me. I did not avert my gaze. I want her to see that I am being honest with her. I am not telling her lies.
"Nikita, you are now acting ridiculously. I thought you said I could stay here for as long as I wanted. Regardless of how long it takes. You won't chase me away? What makes you ask me that right now?
Her mouth formed an odd smile. All she was doing was playing with my feelings. In other words, she did not intend to drive me away.
"If I came into your room earlier, I apologize. All I have to worry about is you. Do you not sense that? I promise not to repeat that. I want to stay here, please."
"Amelia, that is right. Because, Amelia, you will die if you repeat that without my permission.
I was even given a death sign by her, indicated by the finger she put passed through her neck.
"That day, not only will I kick you out, but our friendship will also end! Do you understand?” Though I know it was only partially intended as a joke, she said that lightheartedly.
“Yes. Again, I apologize.
"Well done."
Following supper, as is customary, we spent time outside the apartment. As opposed to last night, there was no indication of rain. The sky is filled with stars. It is a quiet night. There is nothing but the sound of the wind and the rustle of the tree leaves. I was staring at the nearly full moon when I suddenly saw Rofus's smiling face. I sprang to my feet, clutching my chest. My heart is pounding rapidly. I am aware that is not typical.
"Amelia, what is wrong with you? Are you experiencing a cardiac arrest?
With a fast shake of my head, I expressed my confusion. I am not sure either. I was so nervous thinking about his cousin Rofus that I felt like I was about to pass out as soon as I saw his face.
Am I fond of him? That was impossible.
“Tell me, what's the problem? Please refrain from trying to deceive me." Nikita stood beside me so she could see my face.
“I think I have a crush on your cousin Nikita. What should I do? I think he is my type.” I readily acknowledge it.
I covered my mouth. I have no idea where I got the guts to say it out loud without giving it much thought. I now have to explain to her why I made such a sudden admission.
Amelia, you are nuts!
What kind of absurdity is this?
Are you insane?
"Wait a minute, you acknowledged that you harbor a crush on Rofus? My cousin?”
I got to my feet as soon as possible to match her height. I have to take it all back. She can not be aware of my covert feelings for Rofus, his cousin.
"Not at all. Forget what I said. It was nothing.” I waved my hand in front of her, hoping she believed me. "It was just a verbal slip—"
“You already admitted it, Amelia. Why would you take it back? Your statement is perfectly acceptable."
She laughed, and that made me more shy.
"Rofus is attractive and charming. In terms of employment, he is also secure, and he is free to marry whenever he wants. Nobody compares to him. He is pretty close to perfection. It makes sense, Amelia. You have a keen sense of selection."
Is she being serious? Is she not mad?
“If you want, I can help you with him. I will help you get him, that is what I mean. I'll set you up a night to have a date with him. What do you think? Sounds exciting?”
She said something that astounded me. It was not what I expected to be her response. I assumed she would get upset, give me a hard time, and make some accusations. She did not even inquire as to how it occurred. Really? Something does not seem right.
"Nikita, are you sure about that?"
“Yes, you are my friend, and he is my cousin. I can act as a charming cupid between the two of you. Can't I?”
What she says is dubious, in my opinion. This is not the kind of person Nikita is. Perhaps she is acting this way because she may later ask for something else in return.
“For free?” I tilted my head while waiting for her response. “You sure you won't ask for anything in return?”
Her eyes turned naughty. Nikita will not work for free. Did I mention that? That is who she is. She may ask for something in return for the favor she does for me, even though we are friends. I am sure of that.
“Of course not, Amelia. In exchange for this favor, you have to do something for me."
