My mother's scream made me quickly turn around and face them, even though I had tried to run away.
"Oh my goodness, Amelia! What action would you like me to take in order for you to believe?"
My wrath for her grew.
Why is it my fault that I refuse to accept the truth?
"I assure you that he is your biological father! I am not going to tell you lies like this. What do you think of me? Are we playing games? It is a fact. He is your father. We are aware of your right to know the whole story."
I firmly shook my head. It feels as though the earth and heavens have collapsed upon me.
"No! That's not true!"
"You may or may not believe it, but it is! You have his flesh and blood!"
"If he is my father, who is Daddy in my life? What makes you choose him over that man?"
My entire body began to ache from the sound of her voice. It was getting difficult for me to breathe now. I have to leave this place. I must head out. She held me even tighter despite my repeated attempts to break free from her embrace.
"Let me go! Allow me to go now!"
"Listen to what I have to say."
"I am not interested! I refuse to accept your word! All of this is a lie. You are not telling the truth!"
"It was not a lie, Amelia," finally my stepfather spoke.
His voice was deep and full of remorse.
"Your mother fell in love with me first. Before she married the father you know, we were romantically involved."
Is this the confirmation that I am waiting for?
No, he is an accomplice. Perhaps Mom made him say this so I could accept him more easily.
“It is the whole truth—”
“Stop!”
Why are they treating me this way?
What is my fault?
"We are each other's first love, Amelia. The marriage they had is only a part of an arranged marriage."
Arranged marriage?
"You are already planted in your mother's womb before they get married."
This is much more painful. If it was real, I was most likely an accident baby.
"It was not hidden from your Dad. He is fully informed. We had an agreement before the wedding, and we have convincing evidence that we can only provide it to you."
Just like that, I felt my tongue snap back. How am I going to handle this if it is true?
Even if they have proof, I might force myself not to believe. I am still unsure of the veracity of what he is saying and whether Mom is making this up as well. If my mind was disorganized before, it is now so disorganized that I am not sure what to think about in depth at that particular moment.
Do I still exist in the real world or am I dreaming?
"He accepted the terms and agreed. I am so appreciative that he claimed you as his. For eighteen years, he considered you his daughter—"
"Were you proud of what he did? He took over your responsibilities! You are my biological father, but you never became a father to me!"
I did not mean to be rude to this man but I felt sorry for the man who took his responsibility. He gave me everything despite the fact that we are not blood-related.
