Harry woke up in the middle of the night to the smell of gas. He discovered that the gas was coming from his neighbor's apartment, Mrs. Spencer. He also saw the silhouette of a figure quickly retreating down the stairs.
Police officers and rescuers, called on the phone, arrived very quickly. The woman was taken to the hospital by an ambulance.
"The culprit made a mistake," concluded the policeman, pointing to a glove lying on the chair. It did not belong to the apartment's owner.
"He might come back for it to cover his tracks," said the second policeman.
The police turned off the lights in the apartment and prepared for the "visitor's" arrival.
Half an hour later, the door creaked and someone quietly entered, lighting their way with a match.
The policeman turned on the light and addressed the newcomer:
"You came for your glove, didn't you?"
The stranger did not deny it but vehemently denied the accusation that he had attempted to harm Mrs. Spencer. To which his partner replied:
"This night visit is highly suspicious, but I don't believe this man intended to harm the apartment's owner herself."
Why did the policeman come to this conclusion?
