Louis tried calling Liam again a few days later, but the results never changed. He didn't even know why he bothered, it's not like he really expected Liam to answer but he supposed he was hoping. It was a moment of weakness, a moment where he yearned to hear Liam's voice again, but of course he didn't. The only thing different about this time was that it went straight to voicemail, didn't even ring and Louis didn't know if he should play it off as his phone being dead or if he should think it was turned off because of him. Either way, it was a bit too much for Louis to deal with and he ended up crying on the floor of his kitchen, the hamburger he was cooking burning in the frying pan. He could smell the distinct smell filling the kitchen, could see the smoke floating in the air but he didn't care. He couldn't bring himself to care when Liam wouldn't talk to him. It wasn't fair. How could Liam just cut off all ties with him? How could he just not talk to Louis after everything they went through together? Did it mean nothing to him? Did it not affect him at all? Was the two years they spent together just something to pass the time to him? Louis didn't know what he would do if that were true because it wasn't to him. It was much more than something to pass the time. Liam was everything to Louis. He was the reason he smiled, the reason he laughed, the reason he got up in the morning and he thought Liam felt the same way. He had told him as much and not just once. Liam told him this daily, so Louis didn't understand any of this.
He couldn't understand how Liam could just walk out after all of that. After every kiss they shared, after every touch, those long conversations they had about absolutely nothing but everything at the same time. He didn't understand. And what about all those times Liam told him he loved him? What about Liam telling him he loved him right before he left? How does that make sense? If he loved him, why did he leave? Why?
Louis could remember the first time Liam had told him that he loved him. It took Louis by surprise because he thought he was the only one who felt that way. Louis had been afraid to tell Liam he loved him, was afraid that it might screw up what they had but when Liam told him that he loved him, he didn't hesitate to tell him as well. It wasn't something super cheesy like after a really romantic date, or even after sex, or something. It was pretty random but it made it feel that much more real.
Louis had been picking Liam up from work because his car was in getting fixed. He had debated on waiting in the car but decided that since he hadn't really seen the studio, he would go in and explore. When he got inside of course, he was asked who he was and what he wanted so he told them he was with Liam but they hadn't believed him. After a long discussion, they went in search of Liam to see if Louis was telling the truth. While they were gone Louis took the time to inspect the front lobby, seeing different awards and plaques lining the walls. At the time Louis of course knew what Liam did, but he had never really seen it before and it was all a bit surreal to realize exactly how good Liam was.
"Nope, never seen that man before in my life." Liam said coming down the hall and peeking around the corner at Louis. Louis scowled at him playfully, crossing his arms over his chest and huffing.
"Fine, drive your own ass home." Louis replied, turning on his heel and heading for the door for dramatic effect.
"I'm kidding. Yes, that's my boyfriend. Thank you, Lindsey." Louis heard Liam say and when Louis had turned around, Liam was smiling at the girl who hadn't believed Louis. Liam motioned for Louis to follow and led him down the hall, slipping his hand around his waist and holding him close. That was something that Louis loved, the fact that whenever they were together, Liam always held him close. Some might think it was possessive or controlling but Louis knew that that wasn't what Liam intended. He knew it was honestly just because Liam liked having him close and Louis couldn't say that he minded.
