Chapter 9 : I've Been Here All Along

Shi Yuquan arrives home close to 1 a.m., and despite the late hour, the living room is brightly lit. As he enters, Han Yihuan jumps up, happily pulling him and exclaiming, "Ah Quan, Ah Quan, the school I interviewed with yesterday called today and said I got accepted! I can go to school!"

"Really? Congratulations!" Shi Yuquan takes the beer handed to him by Wei Xiao and raises a toast with Han Yihuan.

Excitedly, Han Yihuan says, "I can almost see my first album now! I'm one step closer to my dream!"

"While it's good to be happy, don't get drunk again," Shi Yuquan says, but his gaze involuntarily drifts toward Wei Xiao.

Wei Xiao awkwardly coughs, "I made a lot of delicious food, come over and eat."

Shi Yuquan and Wei Xiao sit on the sofa, while Yihuan sits on the floor beside the karaoke machine, singing a sweet pop song in front of the TV, completely absorbed in the moment.

Yihuan's voice is ethereal and refreshing, offering a different flavor from the original singer—a blend of girlish shyness and sweetness.

With such a delightful atmosphere, Wei Xiao can't help but ask Shi Yuquan, "Yihuan's dream is about to come true. What about your dream? I've never heard you mention it."

Feeling good today, Shi Yuquan goes along with Wei Xiao's topic, "My dream is to become an animation director in the future."

Wei Xiao takes an orange, peeling it as she asks, "Why don't you draw yourself? I remember you used to be good at it..."

After asking the question, Wei Xiao realizes there's no sound around her. She suddenly wakes up to the fact that she may have said too much. When she looks up, she sees Shi Yuquan's face filled with curiosity, "Why do you always ask me this question?"

Wei Xiao is momentarily stunned. Yihuan turns back to them and asks, "Do you want to sing?"

They both shake their heads, and Yihuan changes the song to "You Are Here" by Rene Liu.

Wei Xiao, feeling like a child who made a mistake, lowers her head, "I was just curious..."

"Why do you know that I used to draw? Have you gone through my stuff?" Shi Yuquan questions, his face displaying a deep sense of inquiry.

"I... I haven't." Wei Xiao, feeling a bit uneasy under Shi Yuquan's gaze, stammers.

Shi Yuquan furrows his brows even more, "If you haven't, why are you so flustered?"

Determined to get to the bottom of this, Shi Yuquan decides there's no escaping it. Wei Xiao takes a deep breath and admits openly, "Okay... I did happen to see some drawings you did. I thought you had a talent for it, and if you created a manga, it would probably be well-received..."

"You think so? Hehe..." Shi Yuquan chuckles lightly, a mocking glint in his eyes. "Why are you so interested in my affairs? Is it because I look like your husband? Do you think you have the right to meddle in my life?"

"I didn't mean it that way."

Suddenly, Shi Yuquan leans in close to Wei Xiao, snatching the orange from her and tossing it onto the table with force. He exerts a lot of strength, and the orange is smashed. Wei Xiao feels a few drops of the cold juice splashing onto her cheek.

"Wei Xiao, listen carefully. I am Shi Yuquan. I have no connection whatsoever with your husband. Don't delude yourself into thinking we're close. We're just roommates, do you understand? If you touch my things again or ask questions you shouldn't, I won't mind personally escorting you back to your home country. If I were you, I'd mind my own business and avoid risking deportation with an empty basket."
