In a thousand lifetimes, he loved her.

In hers, not his own. His one lifetime was his burden to bear—reaching into the horizon to find an end, only for nothing to be there. He would have found it humorous, centuries ago, that he had been stuck in this position. His heart anchored to someone destined to forget him, to forget anything they shared. To be forced to start again, over and over.

But through his self-made isolation, he found solace in her consistency.

She was always the same, though appearance-wise, she changed. But that smile—oh, he could never forget it even if he wanted to. It haunted him in those late nights, in years when her presence slipped through his fingertips. It held him in those short mornings, in times when she slept right beside him. And it nurtured him in those stagnant evenings, in reminders when he felt the fragility of human life.

He always recognized her; it was hard not to. And in those moments, when their eyes met, it was like he was falling for the first time. That rush, the stir of his long-dead heart.

A life like his was not without its difficulties—if God wished it, the opposite. But in her eyes, he found his horizon line. And with each passing lifetime, as hundreds went by, he knew it was only closer in reach.
