Chapter 5: An Unheard Interrogation

I relaxed myself on my seat, looking at the birds outside of the window.

Every student has come to class now; today's class atmosphere is chiller than usual. Most of them seemed happy after beating class 'A' in the last special exam.

Chabashira sensei entered the classroom ...

"Good Morning Sensei!", Ike greeted Ms. Chabashira

"Good Morning Everyone!"

"You all did well in the last exam, but you don't need to be happy about it. You just barely got 3rd place. But this is almost time for your final exam of the 2nd year. We might see some expulsion in this exam"

Chabashira sensei sure likes to play dirty to get whatever she wants. She didn't think twice about turning students' happiness into full despair. I ought to say, she could be scary for those who don't know her intent.

The classroom which was louder just a second ago had gone completely silent. Then a hand rose up to break that silence.

"Sensei, I want to ask something. Can I?"

Sato, who seems to be giving me a sharp glare since she entered the classroom, asked a question from sensei. I wonder what she wants to ask? At least from her looks, I'm sure this is not about the coming special exam.

From my observation of her I also know, she is also not the type of girl who likes to stand out. She just has a few friends she hangs out with. So, asking a question like this in front of all the class is not something I could expect from her.

"What do you want to ask?" Ms. Chabashira replied.

"Sensei, I don't want to ask anything from you. I have a question for 'Ayanokoji'."

"It's not like I have any objection to that. But couldn't you ask it after class when I'm not here, if it is something between you two?"

"No sensei, I'm afraid if I ask him this question when only me & Ayanokoji are there. He would make up some lies and won't tell me the truth, I want to know."

"Well, you can ask if you insist. But you have to also ask 'Ayanokoji' whether or not he wants to answer you."

All eyes were on me. They all were curious about what Sato wanted to ask me that she could not do in person. At least I know, they all are sure, it's not a confession.

But me, who already seems to have an idea of what Sato could ask me right now. It couldn't be any more obvious considering the situation and timing.

"Ayanokoji, would you answer my question?"

"Sure, if it's something I could answer in front of all the class."

Well, I think it would be best to play along with her little investigation for now.

"Are you and Kei dating?"

"Yes!"

If I remember correctly, we haven't broken up yet. So logically we should still be dating, I think. It should be the correct reply.

None of the students seemed surprised after listening to my answer for this question. For them, Kei & I are the couple who acts so lovey-dovey when we are alone. So, it was something they had expected.

"Karuizawa-san, Are you and Ayanokoji still dating?"

For some reason, Sato asked the same question from Karuizawa by changing its context slightly.

Many students were confused, why Sato is asking the same question again. But there were some who had gotten that Sato had also changed the context this time.

It had been a few seconds, all students were glaring at Kei to find out what she would reply. But she sat silent, looking down at the floor. If it weren't for yesterday's event, she would have straight replied to the question in affirmation. But this was not the case anymore.

"What happened to Karuizawa-san?" Ike, breaking the silence, asked without pointing out any specific person.

"Well it looks like Karuizawa-san doesn't want to answer. Ayanokoji, would you please reply to this question in her place? Are you and Karuizawa-san still dating?"

I'm impressed by Sato for everything, including being able to bring Kei to class, and asking these questions with such confidence. If someone had asked me this morning, Could Sato really pull off these things? I wouldn't have thought twice about saying 'No'.

"Yes, I think."

Well, I would still like to play along until Kei doesn't say something before.

"One final question for Ayanokoji, Are you a two timer?"

"Two timer ..? What she's saying Sudo? Do you have any idea?"

Ike asked Sudo, who was as shocked by this question as any other student.

Girls were discussing among themselves, even some were showing their concerns by asking:

'Do you really think he could pull off two girls?'

'No no no, I can't see this coming. Ayanokoji is a two timer.'

'Right, I was still unsure after hearing Karuizawa-san and Ayanokoji started dating. I thought he might have blackmailed her otherwise there was no way she would date someone like Ayanokoji. And now I'm hearing he's doing a two timing, if it is true. Then I'm sure he must be blackmailing both Karuizawa-san and that other girl.'

Sato spoke up again, breaking the noise caused by students discussing among themselves.

"I think you didn't get my question, Ayanokoji, let me be more direct with you. Are you and Ichinose-san dating?"

"Might I know, what gave you this impression?"

"Kei and I had witnessed you and Ichinose-san several times in the past together. You were acting closer than any two students of other classes should act. We were still not sure about it, but yesterday Kei had seen you and Ichinose-san holding hands and you invited her to your room alone when there was nobody around."

There were clear loopholes in her reply, one could use to get away from further interrogation and at the same put all the blame on Kei altogether. But for some reason I would like to hear what Kei has to say on this matter.

If she had to reject everything that Sato had said, then there would be no point for further interrogation. And Sato would lose all that little confidence she had collected to ask these questions in front of all the class. Only if Kei would betray and go against the plan Sato and she had come up with.

"Kei, is it true? You saw Ichinose going into my room alone with me?"
