Twenty-five

Kayla

They hadn't found her, it was like the earth had opened up and swallowed her whole. Her dad, Dr. Wolf, had reported her missing yesterday and the police had come to see me this morning. They had asked lots of questions but I knew nothing. She wasn't unhappy, as far as I knew. She'd never said anything about running away, and she'd never talked about her mom, or why she'd moved away from her. They seemed to think she was with her mother since she was missing too, but they didn't know where. I had tried to help as much as I could, trying hard to think of where she could've gone, if she'd given any hints of this in any of our conversations, but I had nothing.

I felt helpless, and I wasn't the only one. Cillian looked like death, and I believed he'd only shown up at school yesterday because his parents had forced him to. Jesse was worried too, he'd clung to me yesterday at school and we'd ended up sitting around talking about her. Cillian had joined us at lunch, and the three of us plus Leigh, Fat Ed and Max had tried to figure out where she could have gone. Cillian said he'd been out looking for her the night before at all the places he could think of, and Jesse too had ran the trail up the ridge. Cillian was going out again right after school, and Jesse had asked if he could come. Cillian had nodded, yes. I'd been tempted to ask to come with them, but I had to get home. With Eve disappearing my mom had put me on lock down until she was found. She thought that maybe she'd been taken by some kind of pervert, and she wasn't taking any chances with me. I hoped it wasn't a pervert...at least if she was with her mom it had to be better than being taken by someone who would ultimately rape and kill you.

Then this morning the police had come to my house. Leigh told me they had come to see him too, after talking to me. I guess they were doing the rounds of all her friends. They couldn't find anything though. Nobody knew where she was. I'd tried to call her phone a few times, but her voicemail was full by now, and she still wasn't picking up. They hadn't been able to track her phone at all, according to Cillian, because it was turned off.

It had been such a shock when Dr. Wolf had called late Thursday night to ask if I knew where Eve was. I'd called Becca right after hanging up, but she just told me that Eve had left before her. I had assumed then that she had been with Cillian, but no. I hadn't found out she was actually missing until yesterday, when I showed up at school and the whole place was on high alert. Now there was a security guard working by the main entrance, he was supposedly there to make sure the students got to their cars safely. I found out from Jesse that Eve most likely would have disappeared right here in the school parking lot. It made the place seem dangerous, it was surreal.

The school had announced that any information regarding this was to be reported to the main office. I also heard rumors that they were bringing in a counselor as of Monday, if she wasn't back by then. I hoped she would be.

I'd made Jesse promise he'd let me know as soon as he heard something, and he apparently had made Cillian promise the same thing. Cillian had told us that Dr. Wolf had promised to keep him up to date. This wait was unbearable. The not knowing was doing my head in, and I was praying that Eve was alright. Please let her be alright!

My phone rang and when I looked at the screen I saw it was Jesse. Hope filled my chest, had she been found?!

"Did they find her?" I answered.

"No...not yet. The police was here today though, asking lots of questions."
His voice was distant.

"Yeah, same here."

"I wish I knew more so I could help."

"Me too."

"Anyway, I am meeting up with Cillian and Ed, we're going to the café in town. Do you want to come?"
