Chapter 19:
Operation Hush-hush / Opération Chut-chut
"CavalierOne to YellowMop. CavalierOne to YellowMop. I have CrazySquirrel on sight. Operation Hush-Hush is on, over."
Sebastian's voice, tinged with excitement, whispers into my ear. It's an odd sensation, feeling his breath against my skin despite him being perched high up on the balcony at least 4 meters above me.
For our covert mission into the library, we designed a strategic plan. Each of us would take up a different position, keeping a watchful eye on the prefects and teachers hovering near the entrance. Our goal tonight? To divert their attention, creating a window of opportunity for us to slip into the library undetected. It's a risky maneuver, especially with the ever-present threat of prefects, Mrs Scribner and Mr Moon patrolling the area.
We knew the disillusionment spell masking our movements wouldn't suffice to elude detection, not with so many potential observers lurking about. This task required precision, coordination, and a touch of daring, especially for Ominis, whose role in our plan diverged from the rest of us.
So we started looking for a discreet and efficient means of communication, something we could use to talk to each other during the operation without drawing attention. After diving into the library for research, we finally stumbled upon a spell called Whispering Winds, with the incantation "ventus susurrus."
"Whispering Winds creates a magical connection between individuals," Al recited from the textbook as we huddled in our secluded corner of the common room. "Allowing them to communicate with each other over long distances in a whisper-like fashion. When cast, the spell conjures a gentle breeze that carries the whispers of the speakers directly to the ears of the intended recipients, bypassing any obstacles or barriers."
"Sounds easy enough," Sebastian remarked, his confidence shining through as usual.
To use the spell, the caster simply speaks the incantation while focusing on the intended recipients. They can then whisper their messages, knowing that the magical winds will carry their words to their allies.
But to make the Whispering Winds spell work smoothly between the four of us and cover a decent distance, we had to throw in a magnifying spell too. We practically lived and breathed that spell for the entire two weeks after the break, right after my second test with Hecat.
Speaking of which, it went... alright. Nothing spectacular, but hey, I passed. Hecat did give my wand the side-eye again, but she held back from saying anything this time. And, you guessed it, another test awaits me right after Christmas break. It's becoming a bit of a tradition, isn't it? Despite the stress, I'm starting to handle it better, partly thanks to the boys' unwavering support and partly because, well, I can feel myself improving. Slowly but surely, I'm gaining more confidence, and that counts for something, right? I suppose there's some truth to the saying 'practice makes perfect'.
