Chapter 19

They landed in St. Georges regional airport in Utah. The Ambulace was already there. Carina gave the Intubation pump to one of the Paramedics and took Kathys hand. "What about our stuff?" Kathy asked. "It will fly to Italy and then wait at the Airport for us." Carina said. Not entirely sure, but not in the right mind to worry about that right now. "And we have our backpacks here. So all we need for now is het re." They drove to the hospital with the ambulance. Carinas gaze fixed on Mayas stats.

At the hospital Maya was wisked away by some doctors and Carina and Kathy were told to wait in the lobby. "What is going to happen?" Kathy asked. "Like what are they doing?" "Well. First they will get her out on a epinephrine drip. Which helps her body absorb the medication better than a shot would. It will hopefully help with the swelling in her throat. If she starts breathing against the tube, she will be extubated. She will probably be on c-pap first, thats the..." "Mask over your face. Thats blows oxygen in your nose, which forces a breathing reflex." Carina nodded. "I forget how smart you are." "They are going to run labs to check for organ damage and do a head ct to check for brain damage." "Do you think she has brain damage?" "Well maybe because her brain was underperferated with oxygen. But god i hope not." Kathy nodded. "Do you think she has amnesia?" "Maybe but i hope its retrograde. Anything is possible. But lets hope for the best." "I'm just scared, you know i sometimes forgett it but i have only lived with you for half a year, what if she doesn't remember me." "I don't think she can forget you." Carina wrapped in her arms.

The teen was so tired it was only 6 pm Seattle time but all this had been exhausting and Carina wished for a place to rest. She got her phone out and looked for a hotel somewhere Kathy and her could stay while Maya gets treated here. She didn't find anything good so she put the phone away.

"Deluca-Bishop?" A nurse asked. "Yes." Carina jumped up and nudged Kathy, who had currled up with Headphones on. "So your wife has had a really sever allergy shock. She has not woken up yet, but we already extubated her. Don't get scared though when you see her. We gave her lots of steriods, which caused her face to swell and look wachsy and puffy. Its just the steriods, it will go down and it doesn't affect her breathing." "When will she wake up?" "We don't know. The shock, combined with the lack of oxygen and the difference with being in the air. We don't know. But she is getting the best treatment. We are monitoring her. She is still in the icu, because her kidney numbers are a little high, but we are checking them every 30 minutes and we are prepared if we need to act. Right now she is okay." "Thank you. Can we see her." "Yes. Come with me."

They sat at Mayas bedside for quite some time. But Maya was fast asleep. Her face was so puffy her eyes were almost swolen shut. Carina asked for some cream to put on Mayas face and when she got it she carefully spread it on the split lips and the rash around her mouth. She also put some on her cheaks and forehead, which was really dry though it looked wachsy. In order to put the cream on she had to quickly remove the mask and put it back on, but the small amount of time already cause her oxygen to drop.

Carina was really worried. And if it wasn't for Kathy, she would have stayed with Maya all night. But the teen was tired and so they went asking for place to stay. The town didn't have many Hotels and all the hotels were fully booked. But they found a small Hostel not far from the hospital.

When they arrived at the hostel. It was a small restaurant, which looked rather closed. Carina knocked. A Lady open the door and asked. "What can I do for you?" "Hi we reserved a room." "Yes come in. I was wondering who reserved on such a short notice. What brings you to this wonderful town?"

"Well we didn't mean to come here. My wife had an allergic reaction on the plane. We needed to land and now we are here. There isn't a shop around here, we don't even have toothbrushes, because our suitcases are on the way to our destination."  "Oh. Honey. Don't you worry. I will get you everything you need. I have some stuff in the back. Are you hungry. I can make you something." "Oh no. If you just show us where we can get..." "Oh no. Thats nothing.  Just take a seat."

Marita, brought the two some pasta with tomato sauce. "I heard you are italian, i hope you like my sauce. Its just some quick tomatosauce." "It smells great.".Carina said. "Thank you." They ate in silence.

"Mamma. Do you think Mom is scared?" "She is sleeping. She should be alright." But Carina was worried too. "We will go back first thing in the morning."
"Alright girls. I have two toothbrushes and some toothpaste for you. A hairbrush and these are two T-Shirt from our anual town run, those who run get one, but not many ran this year it was pouring rain. Man that was a day. All the roads were streaming down water. Man. That was a day. " Carina and Kathy took the things and went upstairs to their room. "Thank you for everything Marita." Carina said.

In the morning the two headed straight to the hospital, but Marita couldn't let them go without breakfast and so she packed it for them. And said just to call and lunch or dinner would be ready. "Funny woman." Kathy said as they made their way to the hospital.

"Mommy. We are back." Kathy said sitting down on a chair. "She looks much less swollen now. Mamma." Carina nodded. She kissed Mayas forehead. "Hey Bambina. We are here now." "Maybe you need to kiss her on the lips to wake her up like this one disney princess." "Sleeping Beauty??" "Yeah. I don't know the childrens storys in english. In german she is called Dornröschen, because she is in the castle with all the roses." " In Italian its Bella addormentata nel bosco." "Sounds pretty, too." 
Carina and Kathy kept taking in a hushed voice cuddled up on the one chair in the room. Both not leaving Maya out of their sight.

After about 30 minutes Kathy put her headphones on and sat down on the floor reading her book. Carina wasn't mad. This was very boring. All they could do was wait.

Then finally Maya started moving and opining her eyes. It was hard because her face was still swolen and made her wince in pain. "Hey. Bambina." Carina quickly took her hand. "Kathy. Come, she is waking up." "What??.. where." "Hey. Bambina. I am so happy you are waking up. I am going to call the doctor okay?" "Yes." This was good. Maya was responding and she seemed to know both of them.

After afew test they ruled out any brain damage and after 30 minutes on 3l of oxygen Maya got taken to the normal station.
