Kam POV

I woke to the sound of beeping. I kept my eyes closed, unsure of where I was. The beeping remained steady until I heard muffled voices. I tentatively opened my eyes slightly and I was met with a blinding light. I glanced around, keeping my movements as small as possible. I was laying on a hospital bed. The beeping was coming from the machine next to me. Across the room, staring at a computer screen and facing away from me was Tony Stark. Next to him was a shorter man with a white lab coat on and messy hair. I slowly inched my way off the bed until I was standing. They still didn't turn around. Looking down at the clip on my finger, I knew it would start beeping like crazy the second I took it off. I would have to act fast.

There were blinds covering the windows near the door, but I assumed I would emerge into a mess of hallways. Taking a deep breath, I yanked the clip off my finger and all hell broke loose. The machine started beeping like crazy and I took off sprinting across the room. Tony and the other guy, who I now recognized as Bruce Banner, spun around.

"Hey, wait!" yelled Tony, but I paid him no attention.

I put my hand on the door, but it was pulled open by someone on the outside before I could twist the handle, sending me stumbling towards the person. I looked up right as I slammed into their chest and was thrown backwards onto the ground. The room fell dead silent as I stared up at Captain America's concerned face. You've got to be shitting me.

"Steve, don't let her leave!" Tony exclaimed.

Instead, Captain America offered me a hand. I accepted it, and he pulled me off the ground.

"I'm Steve. Are you okay?"

"Well I would be, if it wasn't for that big machine over there."

I point to the opposite corner of the room. Spoiler alert–there was no machine. As soon as everyone's heads turned, I bolted for the door. I felt Steve's hand graze my arm in an attempt to stop me, but I was too quick. Or at least I thought I was quick until I turned the corner and slammed into another large man.

"Jesus christ," I muttered, shaking my head to clear it.

Looking down at me was the Winter Soldier. Someone who I was all too familiar with despite never meeting him. He didn't look scary or menacing, like they had described to me. Instead, he just looked confused.

A hand on my arm yanked me from my thoughts. It was Steve, pulling me to my feet and back towards the hospital room. I was too shocked to resist.

"Steve? I was just looking for you," the Winter Soldier said, frowning at the scene.

I chimed in before Steve could respond.

"Sorry, he's too busy getting outsmarted by a teenager."

The Winter Soldier smirked.

"Oh," he said with a chuckle. "Is that true?"

Steve rolled his eyes as he pulled me into the room.

"I'll catch up with you later, Buck."

Soon enough, I was sitting on the hospital bed again, staring at the three men. Steve was leaning against the door frame, probably to prevent me from making a run for it. Bruce was sitting on top of one of those tall, doctor stools. Tony was straddling a chair and leaning on the backrest, resting his chin on his hand.

"So, kid. Wanna tell us about yourself? And what happened back there? And how you attacked Spiderman?"

"Cut the bullshit. You know everything about me," I said, catching a disapproving look from Steve. "And I only attacked Spiderman to keep my identity a secret. I couldn't let it get out in case he was one of the bad guys. What more do you want to know? Your scans told you everything."

"I know you're Kamryn Kacey, 15 years old. I know your parents died when you were 7 and you've been off the record for the last 8 years. I want to know where you've been."

"Around," I stated simply.

"Why won't you talk to us?" Steve asked. "We're not going to hurt you."

"Well, she did attack the kid," Tony muttered.

"Tony!" Bruce exclaimed, giving him a look.

Tony held up his hands in surrender.

"We won't hurt you. I promise. So just talk to us."

"I can't," I said, cringing at how small my voice sounded.

The three men glanced at each other.

"They said you were bad people," I explained as my thoughts rushed through my head. "But they were also bad people. So I don't know how to believe," I continued, trying to work it all out.

"Who's they?" Steve asked.

"Hydra. The Red Room. They were working together to turn me into some super-soldier assassin. They kept saying you guys were the enemy," I explained, not wanting to go into a lot of detail.

"Well, you're going to have to make the decision for who to trust on your own," Tony said. "We can't make it for you. However, I can assure you that the Avengers have done everything in their power to stop Hydra and their allies."

My mind raced. It was exhausting–not knowing who to trust. I wanted to trust these people. After all, they weren't entirely keeping me prisoner, and they hadn't hurt me yet. I wanted to believe that they were different from Hydra. But, how could I trust them after everything Hydra did to me?

"What if you stayed here for a while?" Tony asked.
