Lev walked into class with an even more than usual smiley expression. He was so excited to invite Kenji to accompany him to a ball, he couldn't wait to get to spend some nice time with just Kenji outside of class.

He looked around the class as he walked in,his eyes went straight to the big purple bean bag that Kenji was always sat in colouring during free time.Lev would often join him and sit beside him on the bean bag or even just on the ground beside him.

He spotted Kenji in his usual spot and plopped down on the bean bag beside him, giving him a small hug with a slight giddy chuckle.

"HI KENJI!! I have so much to talk to you about right now!"

"Hm,what is it Lev?"

Kenji had put his colouring down to look at Lev while he spoke, he was always respectful with little things like that.

"Uhm, do you want to come to the ball we're hosting?"

Kenji thought for a moment.A ball? like a princess at a big banquet being pursued by suitors?? no way, It had to be a joke. He burst into a laugh after a small silence.

"A what now?? you're so funny Lev."

Lev was confused, what was the joke?? He was hosting something and wanted a friend to come, was that bad? he gave him a slightly salty glare.

"I'm being serious Kenji, this is no joke can you please come I really need someone to talk to they're all old!!"

Lev was dead set on getting Kenji to come to the ball, he spoke in an almost pleading tone.

"Oh wait, you're not joking??Lev, I don't belong at prissy princess parties. I wouldn't fit the crowd like you do. I dim the light, you outshine it."

Kenji had a terrible habit of talking down on himself from a young age. How could he not?his best friend was the embodiment of perfection and he was just, well, there. He had absolutely nothing special about him in his eyes. However in Lev's opinion, Kenji is the definition of special.

"No I'm not joking you'll have so much fun I promise pleaseeee!! You'll be fine!! Light isn't meant to be outshone, Its meant to be complemented and contrasted accordingly, too much or too little light is simply not good enough, but put the two together and you get the best of both worlds !!"

That sentence applied metaphorically to the two young boys as well. Their light and dark complements each others. Sure Lev was bright sunny and couldn't make himself act serious, but that was sometimes his biggest fault. On the other hand, Kenji was quiet, a pretty bleak realist for his age who could dim a mood with his realism if he so pleased.

Neither situation was good. Both played on their traits as faults. However, when they were together their adversities became their biggest strengths.Kenji's bleak realism was brightened and made more positive by Lev's cheery spin on it and Lev could finally act serious when Kenji knocked some sense into him. They clicked perfectly.

"... alright, I can ask my parents but I will most likely go"

Kenji sighed as he relented to Lev's pleading, he never did seem able to say no to Lev for long when he really wanted something.

Lev squeaked happily and gave Kenji a huge hug.

"EEEEEEK THANK YOU THANK YOU KENJIII!!"

He let him go when he realized he was squeezing him and giggled.

"SORRY sorry, that was a squish huh-??"

Kenji nodded, slightly jarred at how he almost got crushed by a hug.

The bell rang and the two boys went off to do class work together.

SKIP TO THE NIGHT OF THE BALL!!

Lev had been counting down the days until the ball with Kenji. He was so excited to see his friend at the party,he picked his outfit out weeks in advance just so he could look extra nice!suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

"Oh Lev,that must be your friend,go open the door okay my sweet?" His mother remarked caringly.

He ran down the steps and opened up the door, his eyes lit up like the night sky.

"Oh wow Kenji, you look..
