Flashback - Age 16
Anu's heart raced as she stood in the airport terminal, clutching her backpack tightly . Her eyes welled up with tears as she gazed at her mother, who was trying to reassure her.
"It's just for a few years, sweetie," her mother said, smoothing Anu's hair. "Dad's new job is a great opportunity for our family and who knows you'll make new friends in your school and college, explore a new city...you'll thrive in London!" Anu wanted to scream at her mother saying she doesn't want to do her college there but swallowing everything she nodded, trying to hide her fears and anger.
She's frustrated with their parents' decision. She could have stayed with their grandparents or they could have let her stay in the hostel. Her lips wobbled, biting her lower lips she tried so hard to control her tears. She's not somehow who is into these all fun exploring countries. She's her own person. She loves her comfort zone. She loved being at home and spending time with her family and friends. She had never been apart from her friends, her grandparents, or the comfort of her small town in India.
But now London seemed like a daunting, gray monster, swallowing her whole.
Soon they made their way through customs and boarded the plane, Anu felt like a part of her was being left behind. The plane took off, and Anu's heart soared with it, she knew her life was about to change in ways she couldn't imagine.
"Where's Dad?" she asked, once they settled in their seats her voice laced with a mix of anger, as she looked around to find him. She so badly wanted to scream at him for doing this to her.
Her mother hesitated, "He's already in London, sweetie. He had to leave earlier for work."
She turned around to look at her mother in disbelief as she couldn't grasp what she heard, "He just left us behind? Not even informing me? He didn't even-" scoffing she turned to face the window.
Her mother's eyes welled up as she tried to hide her own tears, "He's under a lot of stress, Anu. This transfer is a big deal for his career."
She shook her head with a sigh while leaning against the window while mumbling under her breath, "His career? What about us? My career and yours? You left your job mom? And what about our lives?" her heart couldn't accept the fact that they're really leaving her hometown. She gazed out the window lost in thoughts, watching the familiar landscape fade into the distance, feeling like she was leaving everything behind her childhood, her friends, and her sense of security.
She closed her eyes in dismay she felt like she would never return to the place she once thought of her home, but little did she know her life was about to change in ways she couldn't imagine, but was she ready to take on London, her father's expectations, and her own destiny?
As their plane landed in London, Anu's anxiety spiked. She had never felt so far from home, so disconnected from her roots. The cold, gray city stretched out before her like a maze, daunting and unforgiving.
