Author's Pov:
Anu's mother helped her unpack the last of the boxes in her new bedroom, a cozy space with purple-white colored walls and a plush carpet.
Even though she's very angry at her father she couldn't help but adore her room. He decorated her room according to her likes. In fact the entire house is according to her likes as if he's trying to compensate? Making her frown in distaste. They are currently in a two-story house which has a warm, inviting atmosphere, with soft lighting and comfortable furnishings.
Despite all these, Anu couldn't shake off the feeling of homesickness that had been growing inside her since their arrival in London a week ago. Her mother tried to reassure her, but Anu couldn't help feeling like a small boat adrift in a stormy sea. She missed her family and friends back home terribly, the familiar streets, and the comfort of her old routine. Everything in London felt foreign, from the accent to the food to the chilly weather.
Especially the food, making her internally gag at that thought, for the last couple of days they had to take out foods from outside since they're not yet accustomed with unpacking. How the heck are people here even eating such tasteless foods- without salt and without spices.
Because of this they had first arranged the kitchen and settled filling everything including groceries, now she will have her homemade or mom made food making her sigh in desperation. She can't help but feel like she's starving for a long period of time.
Her mother's food tastes like heaven.
"Anu, here" her mother's calling snap her out of her thoughts. Taking the clothes and books from her hand, she moved to her closet to put away her clothes and organize her books, Anu's mind again wandered to the new thoughts.
Brooklyn High School.
Her new school which she would be joining from tomorrow. Her father had arranged everything, but Anu was nervous. What if she didn't make any friends? That is also ok she's better off alone than being with fake ones, but then what if the teachers were strict? What if she struggled with the curriculum?
In India, she was used to the CBSE board, but here, she would be studying year 12 / A-levels, which was equivalent to 11th grade in India. The thought of adapting to a new education system made her anxious. She had heard that A-levels were challenging, and the pressure to perform well was high.
Urgh! She groaned in frustration, she really doesn't know why she's making such a fuss about this. Many people at her age want to go abroad and here she's whining about it. What can she do when she is forced to do things.
Her mother noticed her with concern and gave her a gentle hug. "You'll be fine, beta. You're a bright and capable girl. Just be yourself, and you'll make plenty of friends."
Anu nodded, but her doubts lingered. She had always been a bit of an introvert, and the thought of starting over in a new school intimidated her.
As she finished unpacking, finally after two long days she was done with her room. Anu took a moment to explore her new room. She had a desk by the window, a comfy reading nook, and a big closet for her clothes. But what caught her attention was the old, mysterious-looking bookshelf in the corner. It seemed out of place in the otherwise modern room.
"Mom, what's this?" Anu asked, running her fingers over the intricate carvings on the bookshelf.
Her mother smiled. "Ah, that old thing? I think it came with the house. Maybe it's been here for decades. Alright I'll be heading down to prepare our dinner. I'll call you once I'm done" saying that her mother walked out of her room making her nod inwardly as her fingers traced out the carvings on the bookshelf.
Anu's curiosity was piqued. She pushed the books aside and examined the shelf more closely. Suddenly, a small compartment swung open, revealing a hidden space making her startled.
As she peeked inside, there she found a note making her frown.
"Welcome to your new home. I hope you'll find happiness here. -V friend"
Anu gasped as her eyes widened in horror, 'What the-', crushing the note in her palm tightly her heart skipped a beat. Who could have written this? And how did they enter inside? So many questions arised inside her making her bite her lips in nervousness.
Is someone stalking her? But who could be? She hasn't even stepped out of her house yet. How is it possible? That too stalker came inside her house.
Her eyes suddenly widened at the realisation that the intruder came inside her room. Was he here right now?
As she looked around with a shaky breath she calculated whether to check or not.
Oh god! This is not what I wanted to happen right now.
Am I hallucinating?
But the notes in my hand says otherwise.
"Anu, come downstairs" her mother's loud voice resonates the room making her yelp in freight.
Clutching her thudding heart, she pondered the mystery, her mother's continuous call made her come out of her daze. Throwing the paper in the bin she closed her room with a shaky hand and joined her parents, her mother told her it was already there so maybe this note was here even before their arrival.
Or maybe this belongs to previous owner of this house.
Neglecting her negative thoughts with a sigh, she started to have a dinner with her family.
Yet, a mix of emotions running down her spine: fear, horror, excitement for the new adventure, nervousness about the school, and curiosity about the mysterious bookshelf.
Little did she know, tomorrow would bring even more surprises....
