"A golden cage is still just a cage"
𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚
I can't remember the last time I had a dream.
But that night, I had a dream.
In the dream, the streets of Greece -my birthplace- are not only bustling with life but also haunted by the specter of war. The echoes of distant explosions reverberate through the air, a constant reminder of the conflict raging on the horizon. Despite the beauty of the springtime blossoms and the laughter of children, there is an underlying sense of fear and uncertainty that permeates every corner of our town. It seemed like a memory before we moved to Germany, before I lost my first identity, before falling sick and before my father disappeared. Where my mother killed Alexandra Drakos and renamed me and herself, where I become Arabella Skywalker.
As I wander through the cobblestone streets, I pass by crumbling buildings and makeshift shelters, the scars of battle etched into the very fabric of our community. Families huddle together in makeshift bunkers, seeking refuge from the violence that threatens to tear our world apart. The Reestablishment, with its promises of prosperity and stability, has captured the hearts and minds of the people, its slick propaganda campaigns painting a tantalizing picture of a brighter future.
Suddenly, I was in my room, in my bed. I couldn't move, and I immediately knew why.
"Hello, darling" I hear her voice from somewhere "It has been quite a time since we last talked."
Of course.
My mother was controlling my dream. She is using her power to get in my mind and play by her rules, as usual.
She finally appears and takes a seat at the edge of the bed "I see that you haven't changed at all" I say, my voice threatening to elevate into screams.
She only smiles at me and says "Only the devil changes, darling."
I stare at the ceiling and close my eyes, trying to concentrate to wake up from this dream.
Or nightmare.
"Oh no no, don't try to escape Bella, we have to talk first. About your mission" she says the last sentence more slowly, wanting to catch my attention.
And she does. I open my eyes and look at her "I thought you gave up, it is impossible to get info from him. At the end of the day, he is the child of a Supreme Commander, he is trained for this" I stare at her confused "So why keep trying? There are better ways to gather info without getting too close."
She gives me a look I cannot decipher and says "That's because we have been doing it wrong"
I freeze. "What do you mean?"
