"Hola, un cafe con leche, por favor." Chaewon heard her mother say as she looked at her phone.
"That means 'one coffee with milk please' in Spanish." she added, which made Chaewon let out a chuckle.
"What? I need to learn some basics." her mother said in response.
"What for? We'll only be there for a few weeks. It's not like we're moving there." Chaewon said.
"It's called respect and manners Chaewon." her mother scolded playfully.
"Whatever." Chaewon chuckled as she shook her head before she plugged her headphones in and played herself some music.
As she looked out of the plane's window she let out a sigh. Her and her mother were on their way to Spain, where they would be staying in a rental house for six weeks. Sounds fun right? If only the reason for their trip was that fun too, but it wasn't and her smile faded as she remembered that day.
"Mom, dad, I'm home!" Chaewon yelled as she entered her house. It was already late, past 11, but the lights in the kitchen were still on, indicating that either her mom or her dad was still awake. Most likely her dad though, as her mother never stayed up this late.
She hung her coat on the coat rack and took of her shoes before she made her way to the kitchen, expecting to be greeted by her dad, but she wasn't. To her suprise it was her mother who was sitting at the counter, a glass and half empty bottle of wine in front of her and an empty expression painting her face. Her eyes were red and puffy and Chaewon knew immediately that she had been crying.
"Mom? What's wrong? Where is dad?" she asked her mother, confused.
"He left." is all she said.
"What? What do you mean?" Chaewon asked, now getting worried.
"He left us Chaewon. When I came home from work this evening he was standing at the door with his bags packed and the news that he was going to file a divorce." her mother explained.
"What? I-I don't understand. He just left? Just like that?" Chaewon said, trying to comprehend the situation.
"Yes, Chaewon, he left just like that." her mother said, raising her voice slightly.
"But why?" Chaewon said, unable to make sense of it.
"Because some girl who could be his daughter is more fuckable I suppose." her mother said bitterly.
"What?" Chaewon asked confused.
"He's got a girlfriend Chaewon. Some young bimbo. He left us to start a new family with her."
As it al started to sink in Chaewon could feel her anger rising as her eyes welled up. How could he!
This was a month ago. Chaewon hadn't seen her dad since the day before he left. She wanted to though, even if it was just to tell him what a horrible man he was and how much she hated him, but he did not want to see her and rejected her request to meet up. This had only angered her more. After that a few weeks followed in which her mother and father settled everything regarding the divorce, and because her mother had gotten herself a good lawyer she had been able to claim quite a lot of money from him, enough to pay for a six week trip to Spain and more.
And so there they were, on their way to Spain to have fun together and forget about her jerk of a father. She was excited about the trip itself. She had always been close with her mother and was sure that they were going to have a great time there, but the anger and resentment she harbored for her father were still bothering her. But she had told herself to try and not think about him during their trip. She was going to enjoy this vacation to the fullest.
